Some Thoughts on Preparedness...

My husband has taken an interest lately in preparedness.  I find it interesting.  I was raised in somewhat this sort of mind set without realizing this is what it was called.  Being raised in a foreign country with shaky security, we knew a large catastrophe or event could change our worlds in a second.  My mother always was very well stocked for food in case of such an event, and we had our own water source anyway (rain water, and cistern for storage).  We lived in the middle of a large city with no yard to speak off (we shared walls with our neighbors) and so growing food wasn't an option.  But also, convenience foods didn't exist at that point in time.  If we wanted rice we cooked from scratch - if we wanted beans - also dried were used.  Meat wasn't easily available and when it was - you could chew on it for hours and not be chewed up - you ended up just swallowing the chunk - so beans were a more appetizing source of protein for us anyway.    So it has always been my  normal way of stocking a couple months supply of food in our home at any point in  time.  We may run out of condiments - but main staples we have.  It would be difficult for me to actually run out of food, I start to get nervous and feel the need to go replenish if we just get low.... and low is less than 2 or 3 qts of dried beans on hand, Less than my 25 lb bucket of flour, etc.  It's almost a little weird - but since so many years of my life were spent that way - especially my raising years, it's truly difficult to think any other way!

I have always thought something like this could happen in our own country.  When I first got married a neighbor set off a cannon around fourth of July - since I was still ingrained in my upbringing years, I actually dropped to the floor and my first thought was, "A Bomb!!"

So we are blessed to live in the country we live in, where such things, normally have not been prevalent in our way of thinking.  Next trip to the grocery, pick up a bag of beans and rice and read up on how to cook them if you haven't already.  It's an economical way to begin stockpiling for the event we hope never takes place!

for what it's worth!!

blessings,

wendy

Hi Wendy, I have the same mindset of pantry keeping. It's been a real blessing to our family so many times over. You never know when a layoff sickness or disaster will strike.
