Bedtime Thoughts

I'm sitting here in my living room about to go to bed.   The house is so still and quiet.   The wood heater is crackling from the metal heating up. The boys have went to bed. Mr. Wonderful has went to bed. We have all had something to eat. We all have a bed with warm covers. Most of the bills have been paid for the month. And I live in the United States of America.

I have a Saviour who died for me. Forgave me of my sins. Even though I bow before Him and give him praise and ask for needs, one day I will be able to touch him. I will be able to bow before him in person. To thank him in person for all the things he has done for me. My Lord and Savior is alive and well, sitting at the right hand of his Father in Heaven. He's not still in a grave, like some other gods people serve. He's not made out of wood or stone. He has ears to hear, eyes to see, hands to touch, feet to walk, a voice to talk, a nose to smell but yet when I worship Him, I must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Tonight I'm going to bed with a thankful heart, a saved soul, a forgiven life, and a renewed spirit.

To quote Song of Solomon, My beloved is mine, and I am His.

Yes, life is good

good night

Are you aware that a piece of legislation is going for a vote in the Senate in 60 days? This has nothing to do with the economy.

Have you ever heard of UNICEF? Do you know what the letters stand for?
         United Nations Children's Fund

Have you ever heard of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child?

Can you imagine getting jail time because you refused your child vaccinations?
It happened in Belgium, parents spent 5 months in jail and fined $8000.

Can you imagine having a child with a disability and if that child does not die of natural causes within his/her first 12 months of life, the government will come in and take that child's life by medical intervention?
It happens every year in Belgium.

Can you imagine naming your child and the government doesn't like the name of your child, so they rename him/her?
               It happens in Italy.

Can you imagine your grown child age 35. He has a law degree and lives in a nicer place than you, but you still have to send money to support him because he has not found a job that he "likes"?
             That's the law in Italy

Can you imagine your child getting mandatary sex ed at the age of 5?
This happens in Sweden, one of the first countries to ratify in 1990.

Under the CRC (Convention on the Rights of a Child) "definitely prohibits corporal punishment", in laymen terms no more spankings.

Don't take my word for it go to Parentalrights.org.

The US and Samalia (probably not spelled right) are the only 2 countries in the WORLD who has not ratified. But we have some people in the government who thinks we should.

This is going before the house in 60 days.

Did I mention that this will be part of international law? That means it trumps the Constitution!!!

Call you Senator!!! You can go to Senate.gov and this will give you the name of your Senators and their addresses. Tell them that you are against or for (this is about freedom) the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child. If you call ask for a letter in response, this is kinda like your receipt. If you write, they file the letters. We will do both.

Let's go to the Netherlands:

In 2007, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a comprehensive study  that evaluated the quality of life of children in more than twenty developed countries.  Starting with the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the authors of the report developed different factors to use in compiling their list of the world’s most child-friendly countries.  Surprisingly, the Netherlands was at the top of their list. According to UNICEF, Dutch children lead the rest of the world in terms of their “subjective well-being,” based on several international surveys where youth expressed their own opinions on their health, enjoyment of school, and overall satisfaction with themselves and their lives.1 Put simply, children in the Netherlands are the most likely to feel healthy, like school, and enjoy their everyday lives. According to Westcott, the secret to Dutch children’s success is that “their parents go out of their way to please them, and teachers expect less of them than some of their European counterparts.”2  Moreover, this is hardly a new phenomenon.  “The Netherlands has always been a very child-centered society,” said Professor Paul Vangeert of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.  “Their wishes become so strong that parents have to work very hard to give them what they want.”3 When it comes to making personal decisions, children in the Netherlands also enjoy an extraordinary amount of freedom.  According to Westcott, the Netherlands is famous for its tolerant attitudes toward activities like drinking, smoking, drugs, and sex, and this tolerance extends to its children as well.4  Sex education in the Netherlands begins at the age of 4, and the age of consent is set at twelve.5  In 2006, over 92% of fifteen year-old boys admitted using some form of contraception, and the rate for fifteen year-old girls was even higher, at 97%.6

Some other things you need to know:

Ten things you need to know about the substance of the CRC.
1. Parents would no longer be able to administer reasonable spankings to their children.
2. A murderer aged 17 years, 11 months and 29 days at the time of his crime could no longer be sentenced to life in prison.
3. Children would have the ability to choose their own religion while parents would only have the authority to give their children advice about religion.
4. The best interest of the child principle would give the government the ability to override every decision made by every parent if a government worker disagreed with the parent’s decision.
5. A child’s “right to be heard” would allow him (or her) to seek governmental review of every parental decision with which the child disagreed.
6. According to existing interpretation, it would be illegal for a nation to spend more on national defense than it does on children’s welfare.
7. Children would acquire a legally enforceable right to leisure.
8. Teaching children about Christianity in schools has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
9. Allowing parents to opt their children out of sex education has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
10. Children would have the right to reproductive health information and services, including abortions, without parental knowledge or consent.

Thank you for reading

Making ironing a little more fun

I love the old southern gospel music.  On you tube you can find all kinds of old recording of music.
Today while I was ironing clothes for the week, I thought I would listen to some old Statesman recordings.
On this site, the person put all the songs on a playlist.  So no more listening to a 2 minute song and having to go and click to the next one, this is like listening to the radio, it automatically changes to the next song.

A Bull Moose Runs Through Our Neighborhood

Although we live out in the country, so-to-speak, we don’t usually see wildlife such as a moose. In fact, 60 moose were introduced onto the Grand Mesa area (about 50 miles away) in the last two years. Apparently, the moose like it here as there is talk that their population has more than doubled in the last two years.

My daughter Mary received these pictures from her friend Jesse who lives around the corner. The pictures were taken by Jesse’s younger brother and emailed to Mary. I thought it might be fun for you to see how brown in gets in Colorado in the late Fall along with the “wildlife” shot of the bull moose.

Off he goes over the fence and up a nearby hillside.

Encouraging Thanksgiving During the Thanksgiving Season

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and will be a bittersweet celebration for my family this year. Although I usually look forward to the opportunity to take a couple days off before Thanksgiving to focus on making my favorite Thanksgiving foods with my children, this year will be different. My daughter Laura will be getting married January 3, and is making final preparations to not only get married but move to Clarksville, TN to be with her husband-to-be, Brandon. They will be stationed at Ft Campbell. As most of you already know, this will be our family's first Thanksgiving and holiday season without my late husband Duane who passed on to glory in April of this year.

I have decided that instead of focusing on the busyness of the holidays and a wedding, that I want to focus on Thanksgiving, I mean all the ways, large and small, God has met me in this difficult year. I'll be honest, there have been some very rugged challenges and I continue to struggle my way through denial, anger, and grief on a regular basis. I'm determined to begin a "Thanksgiving Journal" to record God's faithfulness through this year and through the holiday season.

Monday, I wrestled with worry and anxiety about some computer/business issues as well as wedding concerns and I really wondered if I was going to get through the day. By Tuesday morning, I realized all three things I worried and fretted over all day Monday had positive outcomes as of Tuesday morning, (yesterday). I knew I needed to record these small victories before I forget.

Just recently I learned that 40% of what we worry about never happens, 30% of our worries is over the past, 12% is over matters of which we have no control, and 8% are legitimate concerns. Well, I may not have the percentages exactly right, but Tuesday morning (yesterday) I realized I worried needlessly and I needed to focus on thankfulness.

I suspect you and I are a bit like the Israelites who quickly forgot all the miraculous things God did for them to get them to the promised land alone! Well, it just seems like the month of November is the time to focus on Thanksgiving more and the food preparations less. Perhaps you will be challenged to join me and begin a little prayer notebook filled with things to be thankful for, answered prayers to unnecessary worries and scriptural promises that we can cling to and claim during difficulties.

Here are two scriptures that have been getting me through:
Phil 4:6-7- "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Psalm 34:8,19 "O taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man that trusteth in him...Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all."

I know I am not the only one who had some serious setbacks in 2008, I would love to hear from others of you and ask that you share the scriptures with me and others that have helped you through trial after trial this past year. Please post your comments or email me at marilyn@urbanhomemaker.com with the scriptures that get you through trials. Let's encourage one-another during this Thanksgiving season.
