I've added a few more rounds to the little braided mat I was working on before. It's now perfect size for a candle mat and I'm using it to add some color to under our oil lamp. Not real sure if it will stay this size or if I'll once again add to it! I love ripping the fabric strips (about 2" wide), putting them through the bias maker (which is a bit quicker than folding the sides in towards the middle but either way will work!) and pressing with a steam iron. Once the sides are folded in and pressed, I then folded the strip once more to make a narrower but thicker strip to braid with. Tacked 3 different fabric strips together and began to braid which for me is the fun part! When I ran out of fabric strips I just tacked on others and continued to braid , then using quilting thread the braid was hand stitched as it was being coiled. I'm sure if this was going to be an actual floor rug it would be better to use very sturdy thread such as carpet or upholestry thread but since it's not likely to be used for that reason (no matter what the actual size ends up to be) I hope the quilting thread will hold well enough! My paternal Step-Grandmother used to live near a wool mill and she would often go to the mill to purchase remnants which were very inexpensive back then. Once home, she would cut, fold and braid the wool strips to make rugs! They were mostly gray with a bit of colorful wool braided in for contrast. I was amazed by her workmanship and wish that those rugs were still in our family today since Grandma Polly passed away many years ago. She, like my maternal Grandmother was very creative and used to collect yarn remnants to crochet poncho's for us girls and very colorful afghans for the back of our couch ! Perhaps, I'll one day attempt to make a wool braided rug in honor of Grandma Polly, I'm sure it took her many hours of work but the end result was so worth it! It gives me such joy to create something that brings back fond memories of loved ones and reminds me of those simple carefree childhood days! Thanks for visiting, have a happy and creative day!
