Thursday, February 14, 2008 - Making things for baby

It has been quite a while since my last post and while I would like to be able to say that was because my sewing machine was in the shop, that would not be strictly true. I have basically just been a lazy blogger. My apologies.

Having said the above, I have not however been a lazy crafter. Yes, my machine has been out of order for a while. Turns out it was just about long enough for me to whip through this little afghan for my baby-boy-on-the-way (6 weeks to go -- WOO HOO!!!!). No machine necessary!! It was a fun little project and the pattern is available by clicking on the link in my previous post.

And I did finally get my machine back in more-or-less working order about a week ago. Last night I created this diaper bag (which we desperately needed):

It has elasticated pockets on the sides as well as two larger elasticated pockets on the inside.

Of course a diaper bag would not be complete without one of these:

I pretty much winged it on this project, so unfortunately there is no pattern. It was fun, though, and not difficult to figure out. It also only took a few hours to put together (from start to finish, including designing it as I went along).

What's next? I am looking for a suitable pattern for a cot quilt. I have something fairly specific in mind so hopefully I can find what I'm looking for, and have it made...very soon. Six weeks, huh? Gee whiz.

How the heck did you do that without a pattern? For some reason, bags is just something I cannot get my head around. It's the way the lining and pockets and strap all have to go in, and I just can't do it. SOOOOOOO impressed.

The afghan is really cute. Love you!

Well, I have seen a few different bag patterns and stuff which I am sure helped to some degree. It really just seemed, though, that it came together in a logical way that was actually rather simple once I got down to it and broke it down.

Cutting out the pieces is the first part -- aided by a few crude diagrams, but really you are just creating sort of a cuboid without a top, using dimensions of your choice, so that is pretty easy. Pockets and stuff are just extra bits of fabric and you'd figure those out pretty easily according to what you wanted.

The lining and the outer bag are constructed in two separate parts, of course, which are then joined together, sandwiching the strap ends and the front flap. So if you can visualize how you want the two separate parts in your head (minus the strap and the flap, which you can ignore until after you have done the main construction) then it makes it pretty easy to see what order you need to do things in to complete each part. I think. ;-) Once you have constructed the outer and the lining then it is not terribly difficult to figure out the rest. Does that make sense? :-P

Do what? :-P

I think you need to make another one, taking and posting photos at each step for the education of the general public, and then when you are done, send it to me. :-P

ROFLOL. Well, I'll think about that...but really, I think you should try it yourself... ;-) I'm all out of that pretty peacock fabric now anyway. :-(

I took the bag out with me today (to the big, huge, new IKEA), and I love it. :-) It's a great size and it looks nice and it was comfy to wear as well.
