2 more frugal tips

Posted in Household tips

1. Make your own pizza instead of ordering out. Homemade pizza is usually much healthier as well.
Here is our favorite pizza dough recipe:

1 pkg. yeast

¾ cup warm water

Mix and let stand at least 5 minutes.

1 egg

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. sugar

¼ cup oil

2 ½ cups flour

Add to the yeast.  Mix well.  Let rise 1 hour.

2. Use a canned spaghetti sauce rather than pizza sauce on pizza. I have always used Hunt's spaghetti sauce on our pizzas. We have the found the taste to be BETTER and it is a lot cheaper than jarred pizza sauce.

2 Frugal Tips

Posted in Household tips

Okay! I thought I'd contribute to the 2 frugal tip thread-- at least for today.

1. I don't have a "real" soap mold (on my wish list!) so when I make homemade soap, I need to do a lot of cosmetic scraping to the bars to make them look a little nicer. I put these scrapings into a plastic container, add water, let them sit for a day or so and I have soft soap. I use this for shampooing my hair and I find it works great! I don't even need conditioner!

2. I use cloth napkins. I have for all the 17 1/2 years we have been married. I have several different "levels" of napkins. When I receive new cloth napkins, I put these in my buffet to be used at dinner each night. When these napkins get a little old looking in a few years, I put them in a drawer in my kitchen to use for lunch each day. When the lunch napkins get looking old and wearing a bit thin, I put them in a drawer near the sink and use them for cleaning up spills that you might normally use a paper towel for. I also have "special" napkins that are only used for special occasions.
This system works really well for us. I seldom buy paper towels and I only buy paper napkins when we are going to have a large get together or company come for an extended stay (sometimes I use cloth for these occasions too.)
For washing, I just throw the napkins in a warm water wash with my towels. They really only take a few minutes to fold and we prefer the feel of them over the feel of using paper napkins.
Extra frugal tip: let folks know you use cloth napkins. I have been given MANY napkins over the years from family and friends, who received them and don't use them.
