Going Greek?

Woot! The Greek Festival
Me and the Daveman went to the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church here in Nashville last night.. had a good time .. its small as in unless you like to eat, shop or you have kids... or you like Greek music or you like Greek dancing .. lol.. and it was PACKED.. they where parking across the road at another Church and walking across Franklin Rd.. Had a policewomen out there directing traffic which was nice if you where trying to get in or leave..
Ate some good food.. Ate something that was a slice of some type of cheese that was pan fried w/ brandy and a squeeze of lemon.. w/ a little flat bread.. yummy!!
even better sweets :) .. ate the best Wedding Cooking ( thats what I call them )it was HUGH..powder sugar everywhere.. but worth it.. it was homemade.. all the bake goods where .. I bought a loaf of sweetbread.. this large round dough thing that has been dipped in honey.. an asst. pack of diffrent greek cookies .. all made by these little old greek women lol..
Other shopping wise had to be window shopping but very pretty.. Found some amber that I wanted to roll in .. but pricey..
Theres a booth in the back that was selling Greek statues and pottery.. very pretty.. A food booth that was selling Greek foods like Olive Oil,package pastas and such.. wish I had spent more time being nosey there lol..
But the best was yet to come..
They where letting folks go into the Church itself.. its small but oh my Gods.. it is beautiful.. you know me I was raised Bapitist we don't have churches like this
You could tell this was a sacred place.. that it was holy.. and I was blown away.. I don't know how Greek Orthodox compare church wise w/ Catholics..I've never been in a Catholic Church..but I know now what Spiritualrose ( r/l friend of mine ) talks about when she goes to Mass.. There was a gentlman there from the Church who was talking about their services which I think was a nice touch.. answering questions and such.. Very nice folks there at the Church.. Candles where everywhere.. folks where donating 5 bucks for a 7 day candle to lite and sit ont the ledge by the altar... there where bees wax rolled candles that you could make a donation to light and stick in these box type things that had the inprint of the cross in the sand.. they where all lite.. We where walking out of the santurary when I looked over to side and there she was .. tucked away in a corner ..it was an altar/Icon of Mary...but you know what? She may have been tucked away in a corner..but she had candles lit under her.. quite a few in fact.. it made me feel good..
I believe that Holy Women should be brought forth in any church..
All in all a great time!

I know what you mean about the "essence" of these old churches. Having been a Baptist attender most of my life I am used to the comfortable pj's and slippers feel of church, but at times I really feel the lack of solemnity and awe that we should feel in the presence of God. It's interesting to hear the same thing from a non-church person. We all feel that need to connect with the Divine and to realize our status in relation, don't we?
