God Laughs When We Make Plans

12:50, 2006-Feb-7 .. Link
There's an old proverb that says, "If you want to make God laugh, make plans". Truer words were only spoken in the Bible.

I went to bed at a delightful hour last night (9 p.m.) and went immediately to sleep. I can only take so many late nights before my body and mind rebel and I start making goofy mistakes, doing stupid things, etc. So, last night was a catch up night and greatly needed.

This morning, Dave was up before me so I thought I could ease into my day by greeting the sun with a cuppa and Bible in hand.

HA! That was not to be. I usually look from the upstairs windows and start my day by counting sheep and horses. I want to make sure everyone is on their feet...it's a lot easier and cheaper to keep them healthy than it is get them well. For whatever reason, this morning I ambled downstairs without checking. Dogs and cats were let outside, I grabbed a cuppa and sauntered into the sun room. I paused to look out the window and saw two lumps in the far alfalfa field.

Not good. Not good at all.

I could see the white the lump frantically kicking his feet - by now I'm almost positive it's Zacheous, my fat mini-Romney whether - and he's probably frozen to the ground...again. This has happened before but in much worse weather and it was a huge pain to pull his frozen body away from the ground and then get him transported to the barn. Actually, a friend got the tractor out and we, eventually, loaded Zach in the front end loader to move him to the barn. He was nothing but dead weight as he'd frozen to the ground in a snow/sleet storm and his fleece is one of the larger ones...usually around thirty pounds before skirting. It took me a week of massaging his body and legs, feeding him Gatorade, choice bits of alfalfa and corn, sweet water to get him back to normal. He's just a little short fat thing and with his fleece being so incredibly heavy, he has a tendency to go to sleep, roll over on his back and then he can't get up. He's actually only frozen to the ground one time...thank God.

Anyway, back to the "frozen"
lumps of this a.m....I ran to the barn and threw some hay in the back of the Workhorse then drove to the pasture. Dogs were running behind me, barking, unused to such exciting activity this early in the day. When I got to Zach he was fighting madly to get up but it wasn't frozen fleece that was weighing him down...it's was the massive size of his fleece and he's overweight. He simply had gotten cast and couldn't roll over to stand to his feet. I rolled him over, he jumped to his feet, staggered around a bit and then waddled off. Same with his son who, as a yearling lamb, isn't as big as his Dad but has a beautiful, long fleece just the same.

Being overweight isn't a good thing, even in animals but both boys are none the worse for wear. The worst thing is their pride has been deeply injured and they waddled away from me with noses in the air.

Much of the rest of my day, thus far, has been tending to fleeces, mailing samples, talking with buyers on the phone, etc. I do need to go to the library later today and then to the post office. It's a beautiful day and I'll go for a long walk with the dogs, cats, sheep and horses. When so many of us go for a walk, I choose a pasture where there's only one horse so the smaller animals feel safer. The horses have never intentionally hurt anyone, beast or human, but they are huge creatures, especially when beside a small Jack Russell and it pays to be cautious.
Once again, I find myself burning daylight by sitting at the computer so must close and go. God's blessings on one and all.
