Ode To Hens & Chicks

You are looking at the ONLY item I was able to take with me from our old yard before the sale of the house - my vintage/heritage hens & chicks. These came from plants which were my grandmother's - and I ripped up a bucketful before leaving. Things happened so quick last week, and if you remember, I was lamenting the landscaping at our old house, all slated for removal! We confirmed today with an impromptu drive by: all the plantings have been removed from the front of the house and the mailbox - and the giant tree out back has been taken down!!!!

Ah, well, it is time to move on... my 7 year old took this photo of me (not too flattering - but SHE was delighted) with the bucket of chicks, ready to be put into their new home....

... and here's the new place, a semi-circle garden area at the front of the property my brother created a few years back when he was in the landscaping business. It needs plants!!! So we'll begin this fall with the hens & chicks, which look nice in the rocks. These are very hardy: I pretty much just laid them down and covered them with a little bit of dirt. They will be ready to go next spring.

I also wanted to show you... when I said a few weeks back we could look up at the sky from the cellarway, I wasn't kidding:

This week is exciting, house-wise: we hope to actually have some walls constructed and maybe put up. The roof is completely gone, the house looks like a double-wide trailer... this was a bit nerve-wracking over the weekend when we had to tarp up AGAIN (the rain is coming regularly, no breaks in good weather here.). Every few days it rains and everything stops, except for our vigilant watch for water leaks.

......

I just knew it was only a matter of time :)!

Well, I'm sorry all the landscaping was taken out.....it sure doesn't make sense to a plant lover like me but to each his own eh? At least you got to salvage something to take along with you! It will be fun next summer to see how these take root and spread.

I hope it stays dry for you a bit so you can make some good progress on the house. How's it been going in general these first couple weeks with the new living arrangements?

From now on when you thank the Lord for a roof over your head, you won't be speaking at all figuratively! I love the hens and chicks pictures. I have lots of them here and there in my perennial beds. Bless you this week................Denise (prairiemom)

Hens and Chicks are one of FAVORITES! I pull the "babies" and stick them everywhere. I also call them my "friendship plants" because when a friend or someone in the family visits, I'll pull a few and send them home with them ~

How's everything going your way? Good to hear from you!
