Ok - So I cheated What I did was : 1 quart mason jar w/ lid 14oz of heavy whipping cream - placed in jar, put just enough in jar where the milk can still slosh Now - start sloshing the milk until you see it starting to become solid Pour off the buttermilk and add to jar about 1/4 cup of ice water - continue to slosh Now - In your jar should be mostly a solid chunk of butter - drain what liquid is in jar and scoop the water into a bowl - now you have to wash the butter to get the rest of the buttermilk out. Add moore ice water and start pressing and draining ( you can use a wooden spatula if you don't have a butter paddle) Continue this until water runs clear - During this process you can add some flaked salt if you want your butter slightly salted. - Put in fridge to chill

Well I really should'nt complain, we did have a January thaw (2) days and now we are expecting 8-12 inches of snow :(. If it was'nt for the thaw we would'nt have any place to put the snow. I always try to find a silver lining and I keep thinking that at least we are gonna have water in the well in the spring! 2nd Blessing - When the weather is shabby and all the goats are nestled in the barn I can catch up on either stocking up and making stew or soup or just being able to sit and spin or catch up on my sewing projects |
Well cleanup is finally done after the storms and I found a little time for myself to sit and write. I have already broken my promise to keep up on my blog All suggestions welcome! |
Life is so busy - I am going to try to keep up on my blog! Its winter again, and all the does have had there babies, so I am going to try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This fall we have had 11 babies born on the farm, alot of lil ones running around and alot of tired mommy's! |

Well 2 Nor' Easters and 12 baby goats late,r all is well - Is it spring yet? Four does were due every other day. Quite busy around here, things have settled down. All moms are doing great and so are the babies. We did loose two but the rest are doing well. As the sky starts to clear and the snow starts to melt, I can see that mud season is about to arrive |
I now have the chance to finally sit and write (which I know i'm bad at) but would you believe we got hit with a blizzard, and we have finally cleaned up after the storm. 18" of snow is alot to move. I felt so bad the goats were trapped in the barn for 2 days ( they loved it ) I call my goats barn kitties, if the weather is slightly off they don't want to come out of the barn. The two pregnant does really don't like the weather, they waddle down to the yard and look at me "Like what did I do to deserve this! " and of course the babies just scamper through the snow as if the winter wonderland was put there just for them, what characters they are. One good thing about the storm was I had a wee bit of time to spin some beautiful alpaca/angora wool -so soft. What else can you do in that type of weather but just get warm and cozy, keep the fireplace going and pray the power stays on! |
Well the wind chill finally dipped to -27 :( I have 16 nigerian goats that are'nt very happy) but now that I think about it - neither am I. Well you truly can't due anything about the weather, hopefully the cold snap will break and all will be happy again. Good time to spin and have a warm "cuppa" tea. To all who reads this blog - Stay Warm! |

I did'nt have the time for the milk to thaw
You see I do try to make the most of it - or at least until its time to shovel!
I really admire everyone that can do this. I keep thinking if I only could have a few more hours in the day, I may be able to keep up with things. I wonder how you all do it! My day starts with a quick cup of coffee than off to the barn to feed, hay, back in the house to feed the human kind than out to the barn to let all out to play. Back to the barn to clean, throw down bales and make sure all is set. for when the gang comes back in. We have about 25 goats right now and 4 babies that are 1 month old - Cute! but in the afternoon I milk 3 does than its time to cook dinner etc. I have read other farm blogs - Help! not only do you do what I do but your making bread, making soap, and other wonderful things! What the devil am I doing wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh, well life goes on!
