The Hopeful Homestead

Goats, revisited...

05:59, Friday, April 4, 2008 .. Posted in From Day to Day .. 1 comments .. Link

We went to town for groceries this morning between storms, and when we came home, lo and behold, the goats were back.  Looking for all the world like they own the place.  We have 8 repeat visitors, as unfortunately when two were caught & trailered yesterday, (one the big billy) then later released, they went off in a different direction from the rest and seem to have gone their own way... So we have 8 goats who are using our coop & under our other shed as a place to get out of the rain.  Since we can't find the owners, we picked up some goat feed today to tide them over until they either make it home, or we get a fence.  I know I wanted a homestead, but this is rediculous!  We think one may be pregnant, there's 2 with kids, (I think, or one w/ triplets...) and who knows what else we've gotten ourselves into.  We have no fence yet for goats!  What if we don't find their owners???  On top of that the obvious mama goat has horrible green diarrhea today and I'm not sure what if anything to do for her for that... any help or suggestions here would be FABULOUS!!

If Heidi comes home she'll think she's at the wrong place!  On that note, we posted signs around the area today with a mugshot & phone #, and while Al was at the Co-Op he posted a "lost dog" sign, as well as one for "found goats,"  but at the moment it's not looking so good.  The lake is WAY up, we have 2 tiny streams that have sprung out of the hillside, and people's creeks & ponds are over the roads out here.  If she did go across the river at the beginning of the week, like we suspect, there's no way she'll get back as easily.   Tomorrow I'm calling all the surrounding animal control offices, and the papers, and after that I think we've done what we can.

Al built a bigger chick brooder today in the basement, as our first one is quickly being outgrown, and the girls and I need to go set it up and get the chicks moved tonight.  Whew!!!  I'm tired, how about you.  And who knows what goats will do while I'm at a birthday party tomorrow, and they're here unsupervised... ugh. Hopefully over the weekend the elusive owners will show up!

Peace~

Shari

hi shari
well congrats on the goats its to funny. Maybe they were not use to the feed u gave them and thats why they have green you know. I think you should just get them a bale of hay for now. And oh ya watch out for your flowers. Hope all is well and your puppy comes home soon.Take care and be careful what you wish for because sometimes you might get evenmore goat wise.
