FOOD FOR THOUGHT

If beginning or adding to your pantry seems like a financial impossibility think about this:
Did you know that if you go shopping twice a month and set aside $7.00 each shopping trip for flour, each month you will accumulate 35 lbs of flour (or one bucket) so by the end of a 12 month period you will have added 420 lbs of flour to your pantry?  If you buy one 5 lb bag of sugar a month at $2.00 a bag by the end of 12 months you will have put away 70 lbs of sugar in your pantry?  If you can by 50 lbs of wheat buries a month at $25.95 (current price in my area) in one year you will have put up 600 lbs of wheat?  If you were to put up these 3 items regularly it would only cost you $41.95 a month to had a significant amount to your pantry if you could round that number up to $50 you could spend the additional $8 on canned goods before you know it your pantry would be ready to go.  I know sometimes even $5 is a stretch to have extra  but many of us piddle away $50 and then some each month, eating out, renting a movie, buying a new (unneeded) outfit or trying that new gadget or stopping at a convenience store multiple times a week.  With those purchases we have nothing to show for it.   But what would we have to show for it if we put that money in our pantry? Though the task might seem huge don't be overwhelmed, break the task down and soon you'll see your pantry full and a blessing to your family and it ready to be a blessing to someone else.

I have been trying to figure out just what I need to keep stored in the pantry for a years time for an emergency. We live in a hurricane prone area. My family would benefit from foods put away that would not need electricity to cook them. Canned items and the such.

Anyway, you have really inspired me to keep my pantry more well stocked. It does seem very overwhelming when you think about a years worth of food at one time.I am trying to think about it one month at a time for now.

Thanks for the posts and God Bless!

prices

You've got some great prices! The last price I paid for 50lbs of Prairie Gold was $29.50 - that was a month ago at least. My friend just saw some fro $39 and my local source said the supplier said theirs is going up.....
I agree with you. I need to better organizie my stock pile! I've always been a stockpile because we grew up in a 3rd world politically volotile nation and so you never knew when you might have to hunker down and hide for a while - so we always had lots of food in the house. To this day I could probably feed my family for at least 3 months or more on our stockpile that I tend to maintain. I almost always pick up an extra bag of rice, etc at the bulk food store. But I do need to do better at coming up with an organized method! I also can a great deal in the fall!

thanks for your posts!

Great information! I really is easy to start stocking up. If you plug away at it a little each week, you really do make headway. I get a lot of flack from my family about stocking up...they think everything is going to be okay with the economy. But I keep telling them "What if my husband is hurt or loses his job". So whether or not the economy is doing good or bad, it's never a bad idea to have at least a 3 month supply of food put away because you never know what could happen.
