Just wondering what grains should be put in the fridge? Someone told me that flax seed should be in the fridge? Would like to know more about grains and what needs to be in fridge and what doesn't thanks..
If the grains haven't been ground yet then they don't need to be stored in the fridge. After being ground the flax seed is best used immediately if it must be stored then the refrigerator is best.
For whole wheat I've read conflicting reports, some say yes refrigerate after grinding some say no. I have a friend who grinds what she is going to use at the beginning of the week for the whole week and stores it in a ziploc bag in the freezer.
I personally grind at the point of need, and if I have leftover wheat or flax I leave it in a container on the counter as it will be used quickly in our home. I would refrigerate the flax and not the wheat only because of conflicting reports.
I hope this helps

I have heard that if you freeze grains for two eeks, it kills all the unwelcome stowaways. I store mine in 6-gal buckets. I use the dry-ice-fumigation method if I do it myself, or I will just buy the food pre-bucketed (ie www.waltonfeed.com). whole grains can last forever if packaged right.... have you heard about the grain kamut? do a google search on it - interesting stuff

If your purchasing ground flax seed in a box, then store it in the refrigerator. If your purchasing ground whole wheat flour I just store mine in the cabinet like you would white flour.
Some stores carry flax seed whole. It is brown and looks like little seeds, you can grind these yourself in a little coffee grinder. If you grind the flax yourself it is much better for you.
Remember, flax has to be ground in order for you to benefit from it, otherwise it passes right through you, not doing your body any good.
If you have any more questions your welcome to stop by.
I was surfing for some other stuff, and found this page that might help you.
http://www.waltonfeed.com/self/grains.html
it has the history of different grains, nutritional properties, how to store and links for recipes, etc. a very useful site.
I do not buy wwflour at the store, so I do not know how to store it, and I grind mine at need, exactly like scattertheseeds with leftovers left on the counter in a tupperware container until I need it later that week. it doesn't sit very long.
I have been known to grind my flax mixed in with my wheat, but now I use a coffee grinder.
