How many wash and dry on line or dryer when you buy new material to make something? Well I've been washing material and this one I did today came out and it looked all washed out very faded. I'm thinking to myself I can't make an apron for craft fair the way this looks. Those that do craft fairs do you you wash your material first? Help!!!!!! Blessing haflinger

I don`t do craft fairs but I would still wash my material. My mom bought a quilt from my mother-in-law. My MIL did not wash the material first and when my mom wash the quilt, it came out with faded spots all over it. My mom was a little upset considering what she paid for it. If it was me I would rather take a chance and wash my material and have it look awful for me, than sell it and it look awful after my customer washes it. But that is just me. Good luck with your craft fairs. sheryl
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Let me try this again I just lost it..I wash everything when its new before I wear it. And this is the first time I had material fade so bad. I just took another load out of washer and hung it on the rack and it was fine.
Oh I feel bad for your mothers quilt! Thanks for stopping by haflinger
Hi!
I have never done any crafts for a craft fair but when I make my skirts I wash the material first. One time I made this really nice spring green jumper. I didn't wash the material first and have only been able to wear it that one time because it shrunk. So now it is hanging in the laundry room waiting for me to lose weight or to be cut into squares. Cutting it into squares will probably come before losing the weight! ~Sigh~
Blessings,
Miki
It is good that it faded on you and not your customer.... I always wash and dry my fabric before sewing it. I would hate to put all that work into a garment and have it shrink. Did you think about taking it back to where you bought it? If you washed it according to manufacture instructions, maybe they'll give you a refund.
Joanne I don't remember where I got that,I've been buying fabric since late spring I just spent 150.00 today on material that is the end of buying for awhile until some money comes in. I hope to regroup some. Thanks for stopping by!
Blessings!
I was going to ask about taking it back as well. Where do you usually or most often purchase your fabric from?
I do understand how it can be disappointing when something like that happens because I've had it happen many times to me. Yes I wash all my fabric before sewing with it.
Here's a tip to remember where your fabric is purchased. When I purchase any yardage (I usually buy it by the bolt) I make sure I pin a label to it that says where I got it, how much I paid for it and how much yardage it was. I then put a number on it (usually the code number that was on the original receipt). Then I put the receipt with a swatch of the fabric stapled to it into my files. If something happens to the fabric while being washed or worked with, I can cross reference it and know who I bought it from and with the receipt in hand I take it back to them and explain. Usually I don't get the purchase price back (but I didn't want that anyway or I wouldn't have purchased the fabric), but they do give me a replacement fabric of similar value.
If you are unable to figure it out then I would suggest you make some beanbags out of them, cut holes in a cardboard box and let the children have some fun:)
God be with thee!
I always wash and dry first. I don't use fabric softener though. Especially for quilts...if you are using different fabrics, some might shrink at a different rate than others, so I wash first to make sure it doesn't get all shifty afterwards.
