Life At The Bear Den

• Saturday, October 11, 2008 - I Need Information About Michigan

Posted in Everyday Living

I need your help and if you can give it to me I will greatly appreciate it. I need help in finding rural or almost rural towns in Michigan.

I will have to update later on the why's of this, it is a bit of a long story, but there could be a possibility that Alaska is out and Michigan is in. I have to look and see about prices on house, etc but don't know any towns. I don't want anything that would be consider city.

I do hope someone can help me. I am completely clueless. Thank you so very much for any information you can give me.

We live in Michigan, the southern part, close to the Indiana border. This is concsidered Amish country as the Amish are peppered largely throught the lower area connecting with Indiana (Shispswana etc). There are a lot of rural towns around here but work is hard to find. Michigan is number one in unemployment in the US. We are losing jobs left and right. Believe it or not the last figure they came out with this year was close to 9 percent unemployment here. The upper part of Michigan is more beautiful but even harder to find work. Don't get me wrong, I really wouldn't want to live in another state as Michigan is a beautiful place to live but it can be difficult. Winters vary from year to year. In the lower section we can get a lot of snow to very little, but cold is the big thing to deal with. Temps often get down below 0 for a period of time. The upper gets lots and lots of snow almost yearly.
As far as towns, big towns on the lower side would be Three Rivers, Sturgis, Coldwater, each having a populas of maybe 10,000-20,000. Lots of small towns like Mendon, Sherwood, Athens, Tekonsha, Quincy, White Pigeon, Colon, Bronson. Those are small, small menaing a couple of the towns might sport a stop light and some have a flasher. The larger towns were mentioned because most are within a 30 mile radius of these small towns and work is more likely to be found there.
If you have any other questions I might be able to help please feel free to e-mail me on my blog.

I live in the center of the state. Their are around 500 people who live in my 'town.' We do not have rural delivery from our Post Office, we have to drive to the PO to pick up our mail. If we want our mail delivered, we have to subscribe to one of the towns on either side of us - three miles distant each way. Both of these towns are very small also, but are big enough to have a grocery store or two. Almost every home on every country road that you drive down is for sale. You can name your price. I know of a three bedroom home on five acres that the bank has listed for 30,000. You could probably offer 10,000 and get it. No one is staying here. There is very little work.
We are about a half an hour's drive from Mt. Pleasant, a growing University town. Still small, but it seems to be doing okay for a mid-Michigan town.
We are also about a 20 minute's drive from Alma and Stanton. I'm sure you could look these small towns up on Google or something. About a forty minutes drive will bring you to Greenville, and if you stay in the car a little longer, maybe 75 minutes, you will be in Grand Rapids, the second largest city in the state.
If you want to know more about my section of the beautiful, but sad state of Michigan, please feel free to email or PM me.
