Life At The Bear Den

• Monday, October 6, 2008 - Monday Blahs And Restocking The Pantry

Posted in Everyday Living

I feel so blah this morning. In my mind I want to do a thousand things around here but my body just doesn't want to move. I'm not sure whether to throw in the towel this early and just relax for the day or to make myself do the things I want to do and risk getting in a grumpy mood.

We have another doctor's appointment for middle dd this afternoon. It is a 20 minute car ride. She has one every week, sometimes twice a week. I think this is a big problem with my blahs today. I'm just so sick and tired of going to these appointments. It wouldn't be so bad if they were in the same town but having to travel 20 minutes to the appointment and then 20 minutes back home is just a pain in the butt! And then the appointment is one hour long... Grrrr. But, I have to do it for the sake of my child. I will get over it and hopefully soon the appointments will be spaced longer apart.

I have been trying to restock my pantry this week. During August when my brother and his family were here everynight, well, that took up alot of my food seeing as how most of the time they showed up at dinner time and of course were hungry  I had no choice but to feed them. So this week I have replenished some of my food. With restocking the pantry it then got me thinking of other things I don't restock. I never make sure we have shampoo stocked or body soap. When we run out we just run to the store and pick it up. So when I was grocery shopping the other day I saw shampoo on sale. It was an extremely good deal on it, so I picked up 6 bottles. I also picked up some body soap. I stocked on deoderant also. I now have to stock on toothpaste and medicines. I think I will buy in bulk at Sams Club on medicines seeing as how you get more for your buck that way. I want to make sure I stock on kids medicines also.

I never think of stocking anything but food. I need to make sure I have food stocked for the cats also. Ya know, if something happened tomorrow and we couldn't get to a store or were stuck in our house, my cats would run out of food in a week. That wouldn't be good. We need to think of our animals when stocking food. I would like to buy a case or two of dry cat food to have on hand. I have to say that my cats are great hunters so I'm sure they could survive on their own if they had to hunt for their food, but why have them go through that if you can stock now for them.

Oh! I just thought about this one. I never remember these even when I need them... batteries. i should really go stock up on batteries. I'll need to hide those though because it seems whenever I buy batteries they disappear real quick around here.

Anyone else have any other good ideas on what to stock up on?

• Monday, October 6, 2008 - pet foods

Posted by Illoura
I just wanted to sugget something that might put your mind at ease a bit. When we had all those toxic pet foods from China coming in, I quit buying anyone's product. Online I found lots of recipes for animals, but most were 'dog biscuits' or peanut butter 'snacks' - they were a big hassle to make (still keep the recipes tho!)
But the best ones for meat eating animals was also the cheapest and easiest:
There are two:
1) Just any rice cooked with gizzards/chicken liver.
2)Adding a cheapo can of all-veggies to a huge pot of simmering meat scraps or soup bones. Cook until the veggies are soft enough to mash up, remove the large meat/bone chunks, then mash up the stock and add rice to cook.
These rice foods freeze well. Your animals will like it too, just don't over-feed or allow the food to sit in their dishes...
