Cook along?

{ 12:33, Thursday, October 4, 2007 } { Posted in Cook Along } { 25 comments } { Link }

So I am wanting to host a weekly/biweekly cook along here so we can all try new healthy recipes in the Nourishing Traditions style.  Now I need some input.  Would you all like to try soups, desserts, fermented foods, soaked grains or something else first?

What I am imagining is I cook the item with alot of pictures and step by step instructions.  Then you all try it and report on whether it was easy, moderate or difficult and how well it was recieved by your family.  I then link back to all of your experiences and we all learn together and build a little visual recipe book to share.

Answer these questions please:

1. What would you like to start with?

2. Weekly or every other week?

I'm Game

I'm game! It really doesn't matter to me where we start either.
I look forward to this... some of the NT stuff can be a bit intimidating! :)
Love,
Chas

I'd like to join! I am a NT baby, though. All I have incorporated often is kefir making and some grain soaking. Any info at all would help me!

I'd say start with soups, as the cool weather is coming. And every week! More ideas!

Sounds like a lot of fun. Either weekly or bi-weekly works for me. I'm not picky. I don't have a preference as to what types of food you start with either, but it might be easier for me if you started with things that require as few special ingredients as possible. We can only get to the health food store about once a month so I may or may not have certain things at hand.

Great idea

I would like to do this, every week is fine with me, but if it's to much, of course bi-weekly... Soups sound great to me, since it's fall and if we like something we could make it through out the winter..

Yes, I'd love to do this! I'm new to NT. I'm thinking for me, I'd love to see you use/cook a raw whole chicken, and all we can do with it from raw until there's nothing left. I hope that makes sense! Although soups would be a good one too! And I'd like weekly - but you have 11 kids, and that might be too much!

I'd like to join

I'm game! I haven't had the courage to try it by myself. Can't get raw milk yet and the other kind fermented with kefir gives us sinus problems so I'm still waiting on that. But I'd love to try some recipes.

Weekly would be great but whatever works best.

I think it would be nice if you could post a week ahead what you'll be doing to give us time to find things if needed.

I have no preference what you start with. I just need to get started lol.

Blessings,
Renee

Hello

I read your blog at hs but my blog is here...I would love this, this book isn't the easiest thing but worth the time.

A friend of mine uses this cookbook she started with the fermented foods (sauerkraut) and if you don't mind me sharing a tip she shares with me.....her tip is, work on one thing at a time until it becomes easy AND you make it a habit then move to another. Kind of like making bread, or yogurt (which we do now regularly because we made it apart of our life.)

I'm in!
:-)

Sounds Fun

I'm not getting the NT book until late October, so please post the recipies and not just page numbers. I'd vote for every other week, as this is a bit overwhelming.

Thanks, Kelly

Me too

I would love to be a part of this. I would like to start with the sprouting stuff...it sounds the least daunting. Either that or the soups.

Bi weekly might be better to start with so I can keep up with you :D

sounds fun

Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your blog. It is so encouraging. I am just being introduced to the whole "eating healthy idea" Just to give you an idea, I was recently told what a wheat grinder is, but I don't own one. I have two sons with autism, one is 10 and one is 2, I would really like to change our diets, but I just don't know where to start. I would love to learn from you, and any info you can give me would be so appreciated. E-mail me anytime svroman321@yahoo.com
God Bless You,
Stacey

By the way, I would like weekly ideas!!!

I think it is a great idea. I was just talking to the ladies at our whole food co-op pickup Tuesday about how great it would be to all get together and share ideas, recipes, methods etc. Looks like God has placed it right here in my lap. Thanks for doing this. It will be fun to see how you and others use the "Big yellow book."
It doesn't really matter where you start. It might be nice to do some starter things like keifer, whey, fermenting etc. But where ever you start, will be great.
Can't wait. Thanks.

I'll definitely be watching, learning, and then maybe I'll be brave enough to try it. :)

How about yogurt? :)

{ 10:10, Sunday, October 7, 2007 } { Posted by Anonymous }
Hey Katie!

I'd love to do this! I've been using NT principles "stolen" off friends who have the actual book for years, LOL!
Weekly or fortnightly is great.
Now, for years I have had the desire to make our own yogurt, but for some reason have never tried it. I'd be really grateful if you could walk me through that one! (and add a note as to how you get the darlings to actually eat it. My kiddos ONLY like vanilla flavor!)

Oh, and could you announce a couple of days ahead what you'll be making, so we can make sure we have the ingredients?

Hey, if I get good at this, hubby might let me buy he actual book! :D

Forgive me but I'm new to all of this so if you can help a girl out with anything/all the above, I'd greatly appreciate it. Oh, by the way, great idea and as obvious...no preference for me.
thanks

Traditional Foods

{ 11:12, Friday, November 2, 2007 } { Posted by heartspringshaven }
I would love to be part of this too! I have eaten the NT way for about three and a half years but feel like I'm still learning so much and have a long way to go!

I loved looking at all of your family pictures and cooking techniques-it was an exact scene from my kitchen complete with identical appliances, recipts and dishes! I felt an immediate connection with you!

I am intrigued with how you manage to do the NT lifestyle with a family of 14 and home school. We are expecting #6 and I feel like I'm in the kitchen all the time! It's so worth it but I'm just interested in your take on fitting it all in.

I found this link this morning and thought I would share it with you so you might share it with others. (I'm not big into blogging yet.)

I cut it out of an E-newsletter from 'Ranch Foods Direct' here in Colorado Springs.

"When it comes to nutritional advice, Mike Callicrate, owner and founder of Ranch Foods Direct often cites the fascinating work of the Weston A. Price Foundation, based in Washington D.C. Price was a dentist who traveled the world studying aboriginal cultures, many of which had never been exposed to Western processed foods and were healthier for it. To view a YouTube video with more information on Weston Price and his research, including some intriguing studies about the benefits of a raw food diet, CLICK HERE."

I hope it works. It's a six and a half minute clip about the work of Dr. Price and Dr. Pottener. If not, you could probably search Youtube online under Weston A. Price. (Try this link:

I look forward to hearing of your familie's cooking adventures!

I would love to do this! I just order that book, from Amazon, and I'm looking forward to changing our diet completely. We, do, eat healthy to start, however, I know there's things I need to improve on.

I'm definintely up for this :)

New to NT

Yes, I would love to be involved in this. My family needs this! The most I've done so far with NT is Kombucha. I'll start with anything and every other week would work best for me. Thank you. BTW, I've been enjoying your blogs - blessings to you and your family!
