Monday, January 14, 2008 - Hoppin' Down the Bunny Trail |
You know the famous song that is sung in the Spring time. "Here comes Peter Cottontail Hoppin' down the bunny trail...." well, I never gave it much thought until here lately and it just won't leave my mind so I guess I'll post about it.
For several years now we've had a bunny (or bunny family should I say) living under our shed outside. We've known it and in the summer we'll catch him laying in our fenced in yard in front of the shed. One time we caught him (her) laying all stretched out and relaxed like on dog would on its side. At first glance I thought he was dead but then he popped up its head but contiued to lay there. This past fall we noticed a trail worn in the back yard and didn't quite know where it came from. Our front yard up until this last summer had a worn trail in it from our dog, but since we had to put her down last April we didn't get that trail this summer, but in the fall we noticed a trail in the back but didn't know where it came from exactly. Any way here since the snow started falling I was discussing with my daughters how they wouldn't have to shovel a path for the dog this year in the front yard. They always babied the dog and shoveled her a path to walk on in the yard other wise she stayed on the sidewalk to do her job. She was spoiled. Well, after discussing no need for a path to be shoveled this year. I was outside getting the mail and low and behold there was a path in the front yard (not shoveld down but non-the-less it was a worn path.) It went from the front porch all the way through the yard and out between the gate slates so I knew it had to have been the bunny making the path. Upon further invesigation I noticed that the path also took up on the other side of the sidewalk and went around the other side of the house right under the shed. And low and behold but the bunny setting in the path right in front of the shed. So now I know where the song comes into being from. Bunnies do make trails. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that bunnies would travel the same path that it would be so worn down. Know I know the rest of the story. Well maybe this one at least.
Happy Day and keep looking up. |

Thank you for your comment on my day and for your understanding of my schedule vs. daddy being home. I, too lived in ND back in the 60's. My father was in the USAF and we were at Minot Air Force Base. I remember the snow and the need to shovel an area for our dog, Tippy. When we moved here to VA, my brother was given a female rabbit. His best friend was given a male rabbit. Though they were told to keep the rabbits apart-they placed their pens back to back against our yard separating back fence. The trail they made was a tunnel to eachother, and since we had the female....we ended up with all the babies!!!
Also, I too loved Wanda Brunstetter! I just bought Going Home last evening from Walmart for $4.88! I cannot wait to settle in with my tea and start reading! Beverly Lewis also is one of my favorites.
Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Sharon |
