Saturday, January 10, 2009 - Look @ American History on this day ~ Jan 10

Do you know....

Who the editor of Poor Richard's Almanack was?  Many American colonists started each year by opening the latest edition of this almanac.  It was published from 1733 to 1758.
Here are a few proverbs from Poor Richard:
•  With the old Almanack and the old year Leave thy old vices, tho'ever so dear
•  People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages
•  Well done is better than well said.
and the list goes on .....
(you can read more about Poor Richard's Almanack and its beginnings, and more of his proverbs in William Bennett's book:  The American Patriot's Almanac.)

1861 - Florida secedes from the Union
1901 - A drilling derrick near Beaumont, TX, strikes oil, creating a hugh gusher and signaling the beginning of American oil history
1946 -  A radar beam from a US Army laboatory at Belmar, NJ, bounces off the moon and returns to Earth in 2.4 seconds

By the way..... the real editor's name was....
Benjamin Franklin.... His pen name was "Poor" Richard Saunders.
