The First of December
I can't believe that December is here! We've been very ill for the last several days. We had a lovely Thanksgiving, but that evening, I developed a high fever. At first, I was concerned with my incision (infection?) but as it turns out, it was flu. I am still running a low grade fever and feel very tired and weak. The boys are mending quickly, thank the Lord. The worst of it for them was the first 24 hours. My leg is very bruised and still swollen and painful. It's been difficult to do my daily tasks and so the boys are pitching in with laundry and such. The biopsy results have not come in, and it looks as though I will wait another week for them. We don't have our trees up yet, which has never happened! We will start this evening with some decorating and hopefully, be ready once the weekend comes. When I'm able, I want to take a walk around the farm to gather greens for garland. I'm planning a Christmas open house for friends and neighbors next weekend, so I pray that we can get well and stay well for the festivities. There's much to be done! I am making my "to do" list. I noticed that I need to polish the silver punch bowl. It seems only yesterday, I put it away! It only comes out for Christmas, and makes things seem so special. We have a bit of snow on the ground now which only adds to the charm of the season. There is much to look forward to! A Simple Woman's Daybook![]() For Today

"Over the river and through the woods In just an hour or so, we'll pack up our baskets of goodies and indeed be heading "through the woods" to Grandmother's house. Of course, it's now my sister's house, but it still brings those wonderful memories of gatherings and meals that Gram prepared for us. We have much to be thankful for, as always. Thank you for your visits, your sweet comments, friendship and prayers. I count you among my blessings! A GREAT deal for HomeschoolersAs I'm sure most of you know, I love The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. For homeschooling families, it is a must have resource. If you have always wanted to try it, now is the time! Of course, if you already subscribe, it's also a great time to renew because... The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine is having an amazing sale on subscriptions during their annual Black Friday Sale November 26 – 30. This is their lowest price ever on the magazine and they want all of you to take advantage of this offer and share the info with your friends. Please don't miss out. Your one-year subscription will pay for itself time and time again as you receive practical tips and Biblical encouragement to keep going strong in your commitment to homeschooling and to the Lord. There are pies in the oven and a turtle cheesecake cooling on the counter. I'm taking care to rest in between making desserts. My surgery went well yesterday. I was flooded with peace and just knew that my friends were praying for me. Don't ever wonder if your prayers make a difference...they definitely do! I woke up this morning feeling much better, so unfortunately, I did too much. I am in quite a bit of pain this evening and have some difficulty getting around, but it's only day two, so I am trying to be patient. After our meal tomorrow, I will rest and try to as much as possible over the weekend as well. I look forward to tomorrow's festivities. There is much to be thankful for! Our Thanksgiving Menu

It's almost that time, isn't it? Time to make the pies. I can't believe that yet another Thanksgiving is just days away. I have been thinking about my Gram's stories of her childhood and Thanksgiving with her grandparents. She recalled the buggy ride through snow to their log home, the menu, and her cousins. I also think of the beautiful Thanksgiving dinners she prepared for us all of those years. I sure miss her! We've been finalizing the plans for our Thanksgiving day feast. There have been some changes, though. My sister is hosting the gathering, but she is also still recovering from having a c-section as well, so I had planned to do the cooking. As it turns out, my surgery (biopsy) is scheduled for early Tuesday morning. I won't be able to bear weight on that leg for two days! I didn't realize that it would be this way or else I would have waited until after Thanksgiving to have it. Perhaps it won't be as bad after all. We'll see. I am still planning to cook, even if it's done from a chair. I will have to wait a week for the results, as they have to be sent to another city to be tested. I'm sure I will have plenty to keep my mind busy this week so that I am not thinking about it. I would also like to share this time saving Thanksgiving tip with you. I mash my potatoes ahead of time and put them into a crock pot until we are ready to serve them. I always have perfectly seasoned, hot mashed potatoes with no last minute mashing and mess! You might consider it this year. :-) A Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my Window... We awoke to a dusting of snow that covered every tree branch! I love our woods in winter...it looks like a fairyland.
I am thankful for...a good night's rest.
From the kitchen...more pumpkin bread, King Ranch Chicken and salad for supper
I am reading...the invitation to the firehouse Christmas party to make sure that we RSVP in a timely manner.
I am hoping...that I won't have to wait long when I go to get my hair "done" this afternoon.
I am hearing... the blower on the woodstove, sighs from a napping dog, and boys coming in from chores. Around the house... Boys with red faces wearing Carhartt overalls and jackets... dripping boots and braided rugs covered with wet snow.
One of my favorite things... gingerbread coffee creamer
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...a consult with the surgeon, (possible biopsy), auto extrication training for the boys, Thanksgiving feast at Homeschool co-op.
A picture thought to share for the day...
![]() Please stop by to visit Peggy to peek into the lives of other "Simple Women," and to read the guidelines for creating your own Daybook! And since we've no place to go...We were expecting rain with a few snowflakes mixed in, but as it is now, we have a "white out" and the grass is quickly disappearing! I try to make Saturday morning my baking/cooking for the week day. I made pancakes until I lost count, sausage biscuits and breakfast burritos. There's also a loaf of pumpkin chip bread in the oven (that probably won't make it to lunch time) and a pot of beef stew on the stove. The fire is keeping us toasty warm and even the beautiful giant snowflakes can't coax me out of its warmth. Not so for the boys, who have already come in from making snowballs for some hot cocoa. Now it's really difficult not to be in the Christmas spirit! I think I just might start working on some gifts this evening for our old fashioned Christmas. Honestly, last year was one of the nicest, warmest, Christmas celebrations we've ever had. I'm excited that it has become a tradition. Youngest Son went with Grandma today to pick out gifts for Operation Christmas Child and they spent the afternoon wrapping things up. We brought the venison home this morning and it's tucked away in the freezer. I'm still working on our Thanksgiving menu and I have a new dessert in mind, but it will need a "test run" before we decide to serve it on such a big day. I'll be sure to share the recipe. For now, I'm going to sit by the window and enjoy the snowflakes as they fall peacefully. Each season has so much to appreciate. Hymns For A Kid's Heart
Modern worship songs are nice, but the hymns of the church are dear to my heart. When I hear them, I am taken back to my own childhood when I sat alongside my mother and brother on the piano bench, as she played and we sang. I am also reminded my grandmother’s last day with us, and how we lovingly surrounded her, rejoicing and singing precious hymns as she entered into Heaven. These songs are a legacy of faith, passed down from generation to generation. Many were written out of suffering and brokenness, and yet in a spirit of praise and thanksgiving. They all bring glory to the Father and speak of His goodness, faithfulness, mercy and love. With the book, Hymns for a Kid’s Heart Volume One we can look deeper into these treasured hymns and their origins. This lovely hardbound book contains twelve traditional hymns such as Holy, Holy, Holy!, O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, and America the Beautiful. Each hymn is accompanied by the story of the person who wrote it, heartwarming devotionals from the hearts of authors, a memory verse and prayer, piano music and guitar chords. Children will listen and learn along with the beautifully orchestrated CD, which is also included. I have always admired and been inspired by the heart of Joni Eareckson Tada, and now I am equally impressed with co-author Bobbie Wolgemuth as well. I would happily recommend this sweet book to anyone who desires to teach the love and appreciation of traditional hymns to their children. It's sure to become a keepsake.
