A great series for Science...

Posted on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 03:45

I have had these on the homeschool shelf for literally years.LOL  We went to a Ken Ham conference several years ago and I bought a lot of the stuff he had.  Anyway, I bought Exploring the World Around You by Gary Parker.  I started using it with middle DD when she finished her other curriculum a few weeks ago and she loves it.  My oldest DD is now going through it also.  It is so informative and interesting.  Here is the link to the whole Exploring Series http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/product/Exploring-Series-The,4992,263.aspxI just ordered the Chemistry and Medicine book.  Ofcourse, I ordered mine from Amazon.  You just can't beat the prices at Amazon and free shipping.  I also ordered Body by Design.  One of the major areas that we are needing to fill gaps is health and the systems of the body.  This book is written from a creationist point of view, which for us is the only way to do Science.  We are needing to beef up our Science area a tad.

Trixi

Ambleside online anyone?

Posted on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 01:18

I know its February and I should not even be thinking of other curriculums but I am curious if anyone uses amblesideonline.org .  We do the normal workbook English, Spelling, Math, Science, History, Handwriting, and Reading.  We work through the books every year but I feel like we are missing something.  I like the workbooks, as they are a good tool to what we have accomplished but I still feel like we are missing something.  My two youngest  13 and 10 are not great writers and I really want to work on that.  I have looked at Ambleside many times and almost did it about 4 years ago.  It is so intense though and shortly after my oldest DD broke her arm and got the workbooks back out.LOL   Anyway, I am not looking at implementing the whole program for each year but more do some of it.  For instance, I dont think I would do the Shakespear part but I love the History and Science readings.  What do you think?  I just feel like we should be doing more.  I am also looking at doing an indepth United States Notebook with all three. even my 16 yr. old.

Blessings,

Trixi

Homeschooling Delemma......

Posted on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 05:48

You know the end of the year is winding down.  Although, we will be doing a very modified version of school throughout the summer.  However, the majority of school is winding down and it has me reflecting on things we have done and what we need to do.  I think all in all we have had a pretty productive school year.  We tried Teaching Textbooks for Algebra 1 and that is the best thing that I have found thus far.  It is a life saver!!!  I will be using it next year for 7th grade Math with middle DD and Algebra 2 with oldest DD.  Here is the delemma part..... Oldest DD feels like she needs more instruction all together.  She would like to do Abeka DVD school.  However, I would have to buy the whole curriculum and not just certain subjects.  I am looking at Switched on School house.  Is anyone doing it and what do you think of it?  Is it good for instruction?  I will say my oldest DD is very bright but she is so afraid that she is missing something educationally.  Which is funny to me, in a way, as the other two could care less.LOL  Decisions, decisions, there are so many choices out there for homeschooling.  I am thankful for that!!  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Blessings,

Trixi

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
