in Homestead Farm Animals - Post Comment

We went to Macon yesterday to the Mennonite Seed and Feed and picked up our new babies:

I know what your thinking.... a pink chicken.... my middle daughter could not resist.  Anyway, I got 10 chicks, 2 Barred Rock, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Black Sex Link, 2 Buff Orpington, and 2 California Whites.  I like getting them this way because I have no limit and I can get a good variety.  I don't need 25 chicks but I would like to get 10 every year to keep a fresh stock going.  We will keep the babies under the lamp in this tiny box for about a week and then we will move them to the brooder box.  It is amazing how fast they will grow in a week.

Here is the other little addition:

I know, it's that middle Daughter again.  She just can not resist.  We have done the rabbit thing before and it didn't work but I guess we will try again.

Here are some other homestead animal pics:

This is Beaux.  I don't know that he can really be called a homestead animal.LOL

This is Shiloh.

These are the lovely ladies and rooster from last year.  There are 10 hens and they are all laying right now. Praise the Lord!!!

This is Ginger and Thunder.

The cows are not ours.  We live next door to a dairy and our horses share a fence line with the cows.  Our colt Thunder just loves the cows.  It is too funny.  The wife at the dairy brings me fresh milk and now that we are averaging 50 eggs a week, I take her fresh eggs.  It is a great trade off!!

I know that I have been scarce around here but I will try to update.  It's just that season.  I hope to get plenty of fresh strawberries from Louisianna tomorrow and that will keep me busy for a little while.

Blessings,

Trixi

Ok, I read your list, and looked at the pics, and can't figure it out???? Which breed gives you a PINK chick (M would die for one! - also MY middle by the way...(-;) And you got nearly the same breeds we've picked, and can't WAIT to get them on the 31st... Great pics! Oh- and what is your rooster? He's handsome! Peace~ Shari

The pink one is a California White, you can just barely see it's flecks of black.
The rooster is an Auraucana. He is beautiful but has gotten to be quite aggressive. He may have a short lifespan around here.LOL

Eggs for milk, what a great trade off! Wish I had something wonderful like that to trade my eggs for. We just got this year's baby chicks in.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
