We get excited about the smallest things around here....

Literally, the smallest things. Well, our 10 laying hens gave us 10 eggs today. We were thrilled. My daughter ran in with the egg basket screaming Momma, Momma. It just cracks me up, the simple things that bring us joy. Anyway, I have decided that the egg production has more to do with daylight hours than with temperature. Which I am sure all of you already knew but I originally thought it was both. Today changed all of that for me, as the temps. were in the upper 30's this morning and every single one of my girls layed, even the two who had not been laying all winter. So the extra daylight time must be kicking them back into production. If we keep going at this rate we will average 55-70 eggs a week. Wow!! Our whole point in having chickens was for our enjoyment, healthier eggs, and to be able to bless friends and neighbors. We are well on our way!!
The feed and seed, where I got the majority of my girls, will be getting pullets March 19th. I hope to get 10 new baby chicks. I plan on getting 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 California White, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Red Star, 1 Black Star, 2 Auracana, and 2 Barred Rock. I like to get them at the feed and seed because I can get just 10, if that is all I need, and I can get 1 or 2 of whatever they have. I called today and this is what she told me they would be getting. I plan on getting there early to get the new babies. I am so excited.
Blessings,
Trixi

Good for you!!!An egg from every hen is something to get excited about.lol:)
I agree that the daylight has much to do with the laying of eggs. I think that haveing good feed help to. We have been feeding our hens Kent laying feed and our chicken lay like crazy:) We ran out of kent feed this week so we gave them some other brand of feed. Well.......they stoped laying. We got them back on Kent and they started laying again the very nest day.
We have 7 layers right now and we need more. We hav a lot of people wanting to buy eggs from us at $2.00 a dozen.
My middle child has eggs incubating in her bedroom.lol Thirty of them. We will be getting some chicks from a preschool class project too. They are going to hatch the eggs and need someone to take them to raise. We are the lucky ones who got picked to adopt the chicks:)

I just love chickens. lol
Our whole flock was taken out by racoons last year.It made me so sad.We are planning on building a bigger, better chicken pen this year,so we can have more chickens and those wonderful eggs.
Im glad to see I am not the only one who gets excited over little things.Thank God for His joy.

Good for you and the chickens. My little girls should start laying anytime now. I have been missing my eggs. My older hens all got killed last fall by coyotes so I ordered hens in november and I am waiting for them to start laying. I have Rhode Island Reds. In the past I have had Red Stars. I loved them They were very calm and great egg layers all year round. These Rhode Island Reds are a little crazy and hyper. They don't seem as sweet as the Red Stars.I enjoy your blog. Love, Tina

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
