Homeschooling Delemma......

in The Little Schoolhouse - Post Comment

You know the end of the year is winding down.  Although, we will be doing a very modified version of school throughout the summer.  However, the majority of school is winding down and it has me reflecting on things we have done and what we need to do.  I think all in all we have had a pretty productive school year.  We tried Teaching Textbooks for Algebra 1 and that is the best thing that I have found thus far.  It is a life saver!!!  I will be using it next year for 7th grade Math with middle DD and Algebra 2 with oldest DD.  Here is the delemma part..... Oldest DD feels like she needs more instruction all together.  She would like to do Abeka DVD school.  However, I would have to buy the whole curriculum and not just certain subjects.  I am looking at Switched on School house.  Is anyone doing it and what do you think of it?  Is it good for instruction?  I will say my oldest DD is very bright but she is so afraid that she is missing something educationally.  Which is funny to me, in a way, as the other two could care less.LOL  Decisions, decisions, there are so many choices out there for homeschooling.  I am thankful for that!!  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Blessings,

Trixi

We used Switched on Schoolhouse a couple of years ago, because it's complete and my son enjoys any chance to use the computer. However, it is a lot of repetition and he got bored with it. Of course that's him and there are plenty of people who do use it successfully! I'm just giving our experience and that was how we found it. All subjects are presented in exactly the same format. The only deviation we had was the occasional science experiment. Basically the lesson is presented, practiced with some game-type activities, then a quiz or test given. To its credit, you keep track of every last little detail right there within the SOS program so it really lends itself to organization. You can track multiple students, also. If a student doesn't do terribly well in one area, you can repeat it as often as needed too.
Good luck to you in finding what works! Seems we go through this here at our home quite often...!

Bob Jones University (from what I have read) has a great satellite program.
Abeka DVD program..........I had a friend who did this. It was about $300.00 a month. You have to call in and do your oral presentations on the phone. You have to turn in paper work by a certain date or there is a huge fee to pay if you are late. The teachers on the DVD's are pretty 'out dated' ((70's flash back)). She did this program 5 years ago, so they may have updated.....

Maybe for her "tougher subjects" (math and science) you would see who has on line course? Or is there a co op that has classes for older kids??? I know Apologia (www.highschoolscience.com) has some great online stuff. and their books are awesome too.

We used SOS for 4th grade years ago when I was homeschooling with a new baby. We all really liked the simplicity and ease of use. I'm just more a *books* mom and like us all doing things together.

However my soon-to-be sophmore wants to use SOS again so I'll be placing our order soon. I just think he wants the independence and simplicity ~ not having to wait on me. And while it's not my *ideal* I think it will be good for all of us. It will free me up somewhat to do more with my 2 younger kids while giving him that independence he's desiring.

We used SOS this school year. C liked it ok, but S HATED it. And by "hated" I mean "cried, argued, begged and pleaded not to do it". He said they threw too much information at them at once, had the test, and that was that. Niether boy had much retention. However, it was good in that they could work independently and at their own pace. It just wasn't the style of learning that works well with S.

I am back.....

I have missed visiting with you. I had a really busy schedule for a few weeks.

We have used SOS for the 10th grade. My dd like it okay did not want to use it again. She grew tried of the computer screen. On the other hand, my pastor used it with their two boys for all of the high school years. They did not seem to mind it at all. They always knew what was expected of them, what the work schedule was and they just sat down and did it. One of them made a great score on the ACT and the other did so-so on the ACT.

It is a good way to go, and after a year, your dd will know if that is what she is wanting or not. Also if need be, you might be able to only buy certain subjects instead of the whole thing at once. Price wise, you are better to buy the whole year at once as a set.

Come by for a visit some time!!

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
