Faith..... What is it? Why should we have it?......

I have pondered this same question on many different occasions.  I read a post by Deanna at Hands and Hearts yesterday and it caused me to really think about what it is that I believe.  First, I want to say that I agree with almost all that she had to say.  We too, don't do any Pokemon or Power Rangers mainly because they just look evil to me.  We try to stay away from any appearance of evil.
Back to faith......
Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ. Romans 10:17
I get my faith from God's Word.  So even when I read an article or post and I think oh that sounds good or let me put that into my life.  I need to always go to God's Word and line it up.  Paul calls us to be Bereans and study the scriptures daily. Acts 17:10-15  So just because the John Doe household is doing something and it looks good it may not be good for the Spencer household.  In fact, if we are doing it because John Doe is doing it, it is Sin.
But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is Sin. Romans 14:23
I have pondered on this verse quite a lot.  We go to a church where everyone has large families and are extremely conservative.  It would be so easy to immolate that.  However, that would not be doing it by faith.  If our children go out into this world just doing what they do, because Momma and Daddy did, then that is Sin.  I would hate to see my children doing things so totally different than the way we do but it would be worse if they just immolated our faith and did not have their own.  Therefore, we are constantly going back to the Scriptures to see what God has to say about a certain topic.  There are lots of Grey areas and I think that is where God has grace.  For instance, wearing dresses/skirts, I wear them because I like them.  There is no verse that says all women should wear dresses or skirts because in Jesus' day everone wore a dress.  God did say that Women should not look like men and I think that could be explained very easily today by looking at the sin of Lesbians.  They walk around looking like men.  Anyway, different topic.  Also, what about a quiverfull.  I have many friends who would think it sin to cut off your reproductive cycle (tubals/vascectomy).  However, I think each person has to look at that for themselves and see what God's Word says to them on that topic.  I feel like it is sin for me but you may not.  What would be sin is if I pass judgement on your faith.
Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgement on his opinions. Romans 14:1
This is a clear verse that says we as believers will be at different stages at different times.  Jesus calls us to love each other.  I think sometimes we get so bogged down with rules and regulations that we forget to go to the Word and really back up what we think and feel.  So I challenge you to do what I am doing......
We homeschool, we home church, our girls dress femininely, we don't date, we don't mingle with the opposite sex, we don't watch very much TV, we eat healthy (sometimes  lol), we live a debt free life, we teach our children to love each other, we have family devotions and singing, we teach our son to be a hard worker, we are preparing him to support a family, our girls will live at home until they find a spouse..... I could go on and on but the point is, Why do we do these things.  We need a verse for them.  Our children need to see that our faith comes from the Word of God.

Blessings,
Trixi

One verse in the NT talks about dressing modestly. How many verses talk about heart issues?? Many many many.
You are right.......when we bog ourselves down with rule on rule......we miss the Savior. We miss His Grace. We miss His Mercy....a Mercy that is new, every day!! We miss His Love.
We rely on our "own strength" to keep rules and codes and order. We stop relying on the Holy Spirit......then we really get ourselves into a pickle! Pride is the reason. It's the same old trick satan has been using since the fall. And he should!! It works so well for him!! Believers and non-believers alike fall victim to Pride That is the root for all the "laws, rules, codes and structures". To prove that one group of people are better, holier, cleaner, or closer to God. Scripture warns us many many times about thinking like this!!

I am understanding where you are saying.........

First, the dress thing, I wear dresses to church (all the time) and to some other events that are chruch related. I don't do this to "BE Right With God", I do this first to "look" like a lady and second , the most inportant, is I do not want to offend anyone who IS living under the law, who believe that all women should only wear dresses. My salvation freed me from the law, Christ has already paid for my sin. Does that mean I can live any way that I want too? No !! It means that I have been given a NEW HEART, a heart like Christ's.The things I do or don't do, the way I raise my children, all of the decisions that I make, is guided by the Holy Spirit of God. Do I miss the mark and mess up sometimes? Goodness, yes!!
Our goal as saved ones, is to live as "Chirst-like" as we can and to do this, you must have Faith. That is where faith comes in to my life.
This is just a small part of what I believe and I in no way mean for any of this to judge anyone. Each of us are only at what point God has brought us. A change in you is not a change, unless it was God that changed you. Other wise, it will not be for good. Our fleshly attemps to change ourselves fall short of what our Lord can do.

Love you much,
Pat in Tenn

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
