Memorizing scripture..... and being a Berean

God's Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.  Psalm 119:105

It's that simple His word guides my steps.  I can't say that we do this as much as we should but right now I am striving to memorize 3 verses a week.  I will be meeting with a like minded older woman on Fridays to review my verses and study different topics.  I have done this in the past and am now starting it again.  Titus 2:3-4

Why do we memorize?

Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

My ultimate goal is so that I will not sin against God.  For example, so that when things bother me like family, or neighbors, I will not loose my composure and will reflect on the love and words of God.  Or better yet, that I will be the type of mother who is called blessed.

Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.  Proverbs 7:3

God's word commands us to write His word on our hearts.

But if I say, " I will not remember Him or speak anymore in His name," Then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire shut up in my bones; and I am weary of holding it in, and cannot endure it.  Jeremiah 20:9

I want to be the person, who when tempted, God's word is burning inside.  I want to be weary when holding in His word.  I want It to be seaping out of me.  Basically, I want when you see me, for you to see God in me.  In order for this to be, I must have his word in my heart.

I would encourage you not to take my word but be a Berean and search the scriptures for yourself.  Acts 17:11

My verses for this week are:

As for you my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts.  If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.   I Chronicles 28:9

I chose this one for the fact that God knows the intentions of my heart and mind.  That is powerful.

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.  2 Corinthians 10:5

So in light of the previous verse, I need to take captive every thought.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

This one is just another really, good, gospel verse.  I want to be able to clearly give the gospel when needed.

Blessings,

Trixi

Thanks for sharing - especially about the woman you're accountable to w/ your memorizing. This reminded me that I was thinking of being accountable to someone as wrll and recently met the person who I think would do this. Anyways, the Holy Spirit brought that to mind through your blog. Thanks!

Melanie

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
