Why we homestead.....

This is the day that the Lord has made.

I have seen others post as to why we homestead and after hearing the news last night, I thought I might post some of the reasons why we homestead.  We went to get our oldest daughter some ice-cream at 9:30 last night.  She is having a very hard week ( a whole other story).  Our two youngest were spending the night with some like minded friends.  Anyway, as we traveled into town, we were listening to the radio about the Israel crisis.  The lead story was how this terrorist group Hesbalah was now going to target U.S. interests.   This leads me to why we choose to homestead.  My husband and I are believers in Jesus Christ.  We believe adamantly in what His word says.  His word tells us that this world as we know it will pass away. From the looks of things, this world is rapidly coming to an end.  I know that the end times do not look so great for us as a country based on God.  These terrorist groups look at America as a whole as Christians and so therefore we are infidels to them.  It is just a matter of time until they make it over here and start blowing up WalMart's and Electric Companies.  My husband spent a year in Iraq last year and he has seen the devastation that these groups can wreak on a country.  We as a nation would not be ready for this kind of terror.  The simplier we make our lives the less devastated we will be if this ever happens on our soil.  At some point I hope that we will be totally solar or some other type of natural power.  I hope to one day be as much off the grid as possible.  For right now I am content with learning to can, keep animals, make our own supplies, and learning to stock up.  These things that I speak of may never happen but if they do I hope that our lives will be a little easier because we had some preparedness.  The other benefits that we have found from this lifestyle other than being prepared are having a simplier existence.  This is a good thing.  We try to stock up so that we are not running into town every day.  We are enjoying the lost art of being at home.

Blessings,

Trixi

I am so there with you!
I do not wish to live simplier out of fear. But I do feel the Lord "calling me, drawing me" nearer to Himself, and to get back to the basics. I believe He gives us those "instincts" for a reason.......survival. I also believe the trappings of the world DULL those God-given instincts until we are 'lulled asleep" and "unprepared".
I do nothing out of fear.......when I feel "fear creep in" I check myself, and get back on the Narrow Path. I am getting ready as we speak to start freezing beans and canning tomatos. I am THRILLED to be doing this. My insides are at peace when I am preoccupied with these things........
Love you posts Trixi!!

I think it is not fear of the wars and terrorists that make me homestead, as much as it is the Lord telling me to be prepared for these kind of calamities. He has said that they will come, and that if you are prepared, ye shall not fear. not fear for food or safety or a home.
And so, I am preparing for the calamities. not out of fear of living an Israel-like life with daily bus and mall bombings, but out of confidence in His word that if I do my part to prepare, He will do His when those things happen.
just my thoughts

I agree 100%. I don't think we are doing this out of fear either. I just think that the signs are all around us. God has said these things are going to happen and we need to know His word is truth and be prepared. He tells us these things for our good. We are just choosing not to ignore Him.
Blessings,
Trixi

Totally agreeing with you from our little homestead. There is so much out there, so much going on, and I know the Y2K hype was just that...hype...but still, for us, it's all just plain common sense living really. Any time one has to rely so much on anyone or anything else, there is bound to be a serious conflict in that reliance at some point. With Y2k, it was folks wondering what on earth they would do without electricity...or if the grid went down and no supplies could come and go at a decent pace.
If you homestead, if you learn and grow in those homesteading ways (canning, gardening, livestock even on a small scale, alternative energy and water sources, etc.) you are so much better prepared for the "whatever may come" scenarios in our lives.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
