My husband has the great idea of getting meat chickens and raising them to process.  I am just not sure about this.  The kids are screaming no daddy, please.  Is anyone else doing this?  How difficult is it and is it worth the trouble?

Blessings,

Trixi

meat chickens

We buy meat chickens and we also incubate eggs in the spring and butcher the roosters for meat. We have thus far processed the meat ourselves but we never do more than 5-7 chickens at a time. This year we are buying alot of meat chickens so I will not process those. I will send them to the locker and it costs .90/bird. We buy a cornish x cockrell and they are ready to butcher aound 8-10 weeks. They are very big breasted and have alot of meat. We buy white leg horns for eggs and buff orpingtons for good brooders plus they are very well tempered. Just my own opinion.
Have fun in this new adventure and your children will also grow used to this idea of seeing exactly where their meat comes from. My eldest son (13) does the killing and I dress them. The children know that the Lord gave us this ability to raise these birds and love them(we may spoil them some!!) and in return they supply us with meat and then we start the process over each year. -Dawn

higher protein feed, keep them apart from the layers (for that feed purpose) and watch them waddle about getting fat over the 8-12 weeks ;o)
We were doing 100 cornish rock crosses each spring up north. Haven't done any here yet, but they'll come soon enough.
Now, being the "Great White Homesteader" that I am (LOL...get off the floor...it isn't that funny of a title you know!) I had to name them all and of course, that kept me out of the processing end of things wehnt eh time came. My poor, poor babies....but oh what good eating!!!

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
