Moving RocksLast year we had put a new deck on our house to replace the original one that was literally falling apart. It was such a wonderful improvement to our home for many reasons. One reason was that it looked so much better! Another reason is that it was now built to code and was safe for us to be on. The final reason was that it was larger than the original and just added so much more living space for us! We love grilling and entertaining, so it is a wonderful addition for us!Now, you may be wondering why I chose to title this post, "Moving Rocks." Well, you see when we did redo the deck, we needed to redo the rock beds underneath the new deck and around the house. We had pretty much finished the rock bed under the deck, but hadn't finished the connecting bed around the house. It was looking pretty sad and ugly. It's right beside where I garden and I was frankly, tired of looking at it's untidy look. So last week, I seized the warm weather and my new found energy and began this daunting task of:
![]() Here is a photo of the progress almost 1/2 way through. ![]() A photo of yours truly, taken by my daughter while I am digging the rest of the trench. Don't I look amazing in my cheap straw hat from one of the kids cowboy birthday parties!? Those rocks you see, still had to be moved...I was taking a break from rock removal! It gets a little overwhelming at times. ![]() The soil was incredibly rocky from the previous owners having just thrown rocks and dirt on top of other rocks. The plastic tarp had basically not done it's job in some areas and the edging was never put in place in others. It was a battle won only with patience, a pick-axe and sweat! I told the kids I was mining for gold when I was using the pick-axe. It was very comical. Those things are heavy to use! ![]() Here is the finished product! I was so glad to be finished with it! It took me 3 days of working pretty much all day on it. The first 2 days I was solo on the job and the last day (Saturday), my husband helped for a while and then my brother helped me conquer it. I was so thankful for the added help! We "rocked it" out! The other thing I want to do to the side of the rock bed is to line it with those larger stones that you see in the picture above. It will all get done in the next month or so with more projects to be completed for the final amazing photo! 10:08 - Monday, April 20, 2009 - post comment
