Chicken Update
|
Sadly, we have gotten rid of our former rooster, Doe. The reason was because he was being too aggresive. He was the only rooster in our coop and he thought he was the king. He also crowed to much. We live in a small city so we have noise oridnances. He would crow at like one o' clock in the morning.
Doe went to live with Southern Blessings because she live in the country and has other roosters. Doe actually got picked on as soon as he got there. While my mom was there, she and Southern Blessings decided to go to a livestock auction. Southern Blessings got 4 pullets, and we got one. All the pullets are light brahams. The breed originated in China. Now we have a French hen and a Chinese hen in our flock. We named our newest hen Chickety China the Chinese Chicken. But we call her China for short.

Isn't she the cutest little thing? Eveytime we go in there we cuddle her. Here she is resting on my oldest brother's shoulder. He didn't put her there. He was just sitting in that position near the nesting boxes on which China was standing and she flew on him.

A new look
This weekend my mom gave my room a new coat of paint. It took her two days to complete. On Saturday, when she started, she ran out of paint. She only used one gallon for day one. But it only covered two walls. So Saturday afternoon she drove to Home Depot to buy some more paint for my room. It turned out their machine was down. So we had to wait until Sunday afternoon to get the paint.
I chose rich green walls and white trim. I forgot to remind my Mom to take "before" pictures. So we only have "after" pictures.
Here is my desk:

I did have a bulletin board over my desk, but I decided not to hang it back up. My pink lamp looks great against the green wall.
Here's my dresser:

I had junk piled on top of it until Mom told me to clean it off.
Last but not least here's my bed:

The picture and quilt weren't there before the new paint job. After Mom painted she hung the picture and spread the quilt on my bed. Mom got the quilt at a yard sale for $10.00. I don't think I am the only who loves my room. The kittens do too, at least my bed.

I love my room now.

First eggs
A few weeks ago we got our first four eggs from our newest flock. Our new flock includes different varieties of hens and one rooster. Our rooster is named Doe (as in John or Jane Doe), because when we got this flock the hatchery threw in a freebie. So we couldn't tell if this chick was a boy or girl.
My favorite hen in this flock is Cinco. Cinco is a French hen that has five toes, feathers on the legs, and a beard.
Before these eggs, we got a couple white eggs, which we think it came from one of our Polish hens. But the new eggs are brown.
We are looking forward to getting more eggs from our lovely hens.

Caterpillars
As my dad was walking down the pathway after getting off work, he found a caterpillar. The caterpillar was beautiful. It's bright green with orange and black stripes. My mom researched about the caterpillar. Here's what she found out:
1. The caterpillar will transform into a swallowtail butterfly.
2. They love to eat parsley and fennel. We have both in the herb garden.
While mom was about to cut some more parsley she found another suprise. She found three to six more caterpillars that look just the same. Mom ran inside to get some jars to put the caterpillars in and then snipped some parsley. Justin ran to the nearest tree and plucked off a few big leaves. We put a big leaf in each jar along with some parsley and a caterpillar.
Each caterpillar has a name: Stella, Luna, and Bubba. So far the caterpillars are doing fine, and one has already formed a chrysillis. |

First day of school
We started school the first day public school started. I'm in tenth grade, Justin, 13, is in eighth grade, and Adam, 5, is in kindergarten. Every day we start off with the calender which is for Adam. Adam loves using the calender.
In unit study Justin and I are studying The American Revolution. For one of our projects we made a Jamestown replica.
Every Wendsday I have to do crafts with Adam for his school. This year Justin and I have to do more independent work, because my mom has to work with Adam.
For one of my electives I do biographies. I have to read a book about someone. Right now I'm reading about Margaret Thatcher. So I take notes from the books and computer and form a report from my notes I took.
Every Friday our family goes to the library which is where I get some of my books for biographies. For math I do pre-algebra, I did pre-algebra last year in public school but I really didn't get the problems. Ever since we started math at home, I'm finally actually starting to get it.
How was your first day of school?
