Never dull...

Posted in The Homestead
Hello all...

As usual things have been busy around here. Yesterday afternoon, Jeff, Mellie and I were at the library when my cell rang. It was Mark calling to let me know that THIS was in our yard...

Isn't this an awesome bird?!!?
We have no idea where it came from. It stayed around long enough for me and the kids to get home and see it in person. Mark and Amanda had been watching it for a while. It left through the barbed wire a little after we got home. The kids followed it for a little, trying to see if they could persuade it to come back to our place. It almost worked. Jett, our neighbors lab wanted to see what the kids were up to and that's when the peacock took off.
Sooo, now we're looking into finding out how hard they would be to raise here.

Blessings all,
Leigh-Ann

We never get any company like that at our place.

Thanks for sharing the picture with us.

Take care,

Sunday, July 27, 2008 - Peacocks aren't that hard to raise...

We had them for several years, just got rid of them last fall. We loved them, but DH grew more and more upset at them. They love to perch on cars and trucks and will scratch the paint with their claws. They will poop on anything... often it was DH's truck. But the deck, by the front door, on the driveway... they weren't particular, but it often was where barefeet like to run. They loved our garden and there was no keeping them out. They got the tomatoes if I didn't get them as soon as they turned red. They liked the summer squash as well.

I just thought I'd share. They are beautiful birds with loud calls that you will soon get used to. Their mating rituals are a riot to watch. The little ones are quite frail at first, but soon are out with momma and quicker than anything. We live in northern Iowa and they didn't mind the cold winters, nor did they mind the warm summers. They'll eat anything from corn, to cat food, dog food, bugs and small critters. They loved left overs, too. They are hard to catch. Often when you first get them, they may not want to STAY with you... ours went to the neighbors farm for one summer the first year we got them... they loved it, the clutch they hatched all were gotten by coons up at their farm. The older couple didn't feed them, but in the summer they didn't need to. But as winter came, they came back for food. They then stayed with us from then on... figured out who fed them, I guess. Anyways, just sharing... thought it would give you some perspective on the good and the bad. We loved that they called loudly when strangers came up... usually they scared the visitors by startling them, calling loudly when they walked into the yard... Not the normal "help" call, but a stronger louder one that meant ... you don't belong and we had grown men jump and question... What the heck was that... we often didn't realize the peacock had called, we were that used to the loud calls that we'd have to say... what do you mean? And they'd repeat the loud call and then we'd laugh knowing it was our peacocks.

Warmly, ~Melissa

About Me

I'm a Christian woman who has had the blessing of being married to my best friend for a little more than 19 years. I'm also a homeschooling mom to our 3 great kids. We're trying to figure out how to stay country when country is disappearing at an alarming rate here in our little corner of the world.

Pray with St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is discord, vision. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
