Budget Talk and More…

Tightening the budget belt has been on my mind lately. With the cost of gas continuing to go up as well as the cost of food and other items it is requiring an extra degree of thought to how the money is spent. One of the things I have been doing is instituting a “No Leftovers” policy. In the past if I had a few leftovers from a dinner I would not think to much of it. But now I have started to scale down how much food I make (especially with Leanne gone and Emily not always home for all meals) and make sure the kids eat what leftovers we have for lunch the next day… or I even serve them for dinner the next night if there are enough. I did this yesterday. I made Yummy Pinto Beans the day before and used 4 cups of dry beans (and a pound of hamburger added to the recipe) so it made a large pot of beans for us.   We had enough for dinner last night too. I also will examine all leftovers that aren’t enough to serve a second time and see what new creation I can make from. Stir fry from leftover rice, chili over baked potatoes, goulash from a small amount of leftover spaghetti sauce, fried potato patties from leftover mashed potatoes, adding leftover pot roast to noodles or potatoes and adding a cream sauce to make a casserole. It is amazing how much I can save by thinking creatively with leftovers! I am also watching what I buy so it does not go to waste.. like too many tomatoes or fruit or whatever it may be. I am keeping my meals simple to make with a minimum amount of ingredients. So far my efforts have been noticeable on the budget! And I am still able to buy various organic products and still save.

The next area we looked at was how many cars we have on insurance policies that we don’t drive. My husband has a truck he only drives occasionally and we have a full size 12-passenger van we now only drive occasionally due to that $125 price tag at the gas pump fill up. So we talked with our insurance man and he said it was fine to put the cars on a comprehensive policy only as long as we are not driving them. IF we would want to drive them we just call the insurance company up and let them know we need the vehicle for the day and they adjust the policy for that day. The cost has been about $10 every 6 months for each vehicle.. which has been a huge savings. I have heard that not every insurance company will do this but I do know State Farm is one that will.

Driving with multiple purposes is also one way we are saving money. We live quite a ways from town so combining errands and shopping trips and not going into town more often than necessary is helping. Although things seem to come up some weeks that make this hard to do. So if I need to grocery shop I will also use that trip to go to the bank, the post office, combine the trip with appointments and so on. If Emily needs to go to the local college to take a CLEP test then afterwards we will grocery shop and I try and buy my gas at the lest expensive gas stations in the city when I am out rather than the more spendy ones that are closer to home.

In the home I am working harder at reusing as many things as possible like plastic zip bags or my bread bags. Also when I think I need something I stop and ask myself if there is something I already have that would work just as well. As an example a few weeks ago I made up a batch of homemade disinfectant cleaner and used some paper towels that my husband had sitting in the shop (he got them from cleaning out his dad’s house as normally I don’t buy paper towels). I needed a container to put them in but did not have one big enough to work. So instead I used a gallon size zip lock bag and have been reusing the bag since then. It works fine.

Another thing I already do to save us money is use cloth napkins.  They are easy to make and I have a ton of them now. I purchased the fabric from Walmart on the $2 a yard table. I can get 50 napkins made for less than $3. I wash them once a week or so.

On the homestead:
Well my daughter’s trip to the west coast is almost over and I am happy to say I have had several opportunities to visit with her, Jonathan and my grandbaby Caden. We celebrated our holiday a few days early since Tobin had to work on the 4th. Here are a few pics of our time together…

Leanne sent us another letter.. I think she is feeling a bit homesick and that makes my mama heart sad for her. But I know this will be a wonderful experience when she looks back. She is a real homebody and I figured before she left she would have some difficult adjustments to make. So we continue to keep her in our prayers daily. We all are missing her so much. She has 6 weeks left to go and this week her team leaves for Egypt. I hope to have more pics from the Teen Missions website to post soon.

Hope you all are having a great holiday weekend on your homesteads!

My prayers this morning included this, "God, please don't let me leave any lasting scars with my attitude today."

OK ladies, can you guess what time it is?  LOL

So far so good, they all seem to be avoiding me, so that might be the reason no one has cryed yet. They've learned well.

Have a great day everyone.

I am still here

It has been a while since my last post.  Things have just been really busy on the farm.  My mom and stepdad are moving back here.  They are completely remodeling my grandpaws house.   We have been helping them do that.  There is a lot to do.  I have been trying to clean out a lot of stuff from my house.  Now I am getting a lot of stuff from papaws house.    I have been working all day on my kitchen reorganizing  my cabinets and getting rid of stuff  I just don`t use.  My poor house is a  wreck right now.   I am really behind on things.
We finally finished up softball Tuesday night.   Hannah made all-stars and it really has taken up a lot of time.   Practices everyday for three hours.  Some days they had practice in the morning and evening.    All that hard work for just one win.  Hannah did have fun.   Sammy is still playing baseball.  They started a special 7 and 8 year old team.  You have to be 9 to be able to play all-stars.   But we are not sure if there will be enough players.

My garden is doing really good.    I have been getting zucchini, crooked neck squash, and cucumbers so  far.   Oh, carrots and beets too.   I have canned 14 pints of pickled beets and 5 pints of cherries.   I am going to be canning carrots tomorrow.    My  corn and beans look really good.
I am going to be making curtains for my mom.   I am making them for the bathroom and kitchen.   She may also want me to make some for the bedrooms and living room.

I sold all my big chickens.   Just getting to costly to raise them.  I can`t believe the price of chick starter.  We are raising meat chickens.
Well there has been lots of others things going on.  I will catch up on them later.  We rented a movie and I am going to go watch it.

We started our day early by picking raspberries.  I canned 7 quarts, made 2 batches of jam, saved five pints, and RaeAnne made a raspberry pie.

We will be grilling hamburgers for supper.  I made potato salad and homemade baked beans for supper.  Emily and Joise are going to make a lettuce salad.  I think we might eat outside.  We will go to see the fireworks tonight.

We picked up Josie at 3:00 this afternoon.  She had a great week up at camp.

The last few weeks God has so allowed me to see a first hand view of what we do to ourselves in our need and desire to try to be God in our own lives.  One family that we were privileged to be around were really cute folks, darling child, and on the outside seemed so together and full of potential.  However when we got past their outside what we found were lives filled with tortures of their own making from debts to dependency....and the beliefs that their problems were not answerable by anything, not even God.

The second scenario we lived and learned from involved watching a broken family.  The Dad had turned away from God a long time ago....he had systematically lost everything that mattered to him as God allowed him to have his own way on every topic in his life.  Slowly over 12 years he has reduced himself to being alone, without his children, without a good career, and now without friends for the most part.  His devotion to control has cost him almost everything he could have had.

A third scenario involves a very bright young family.  They have successfully achieved the 300K home, good works in their local church, health and love in their home, but abundance eludes them.  They cannot see tithing in money form though they give of them selves regularly.  They have thought that better to invest in their future and give of their services......and its funny how in that decision, somehow their finances always don't work out. They see saw on making it solidly despite hundreds of thousands of dollars of business a year.....bread money on some days of the month just doesn't exist.

As we have prayed and listened to each of the people in the above stories. God has so shown me humility.  I know that the root cause of all the issues they are facing I too face.  The issues are such no brainers when you see it in others. They trust the problem more than they trust God is a God.  They trust their control is better than submission to God in their lives.  They trust sickness and overwhelming issues are more powerful than the way of Jesus and the promises of God to Abraham's and his descendents that if we obey and worship God He will provide for us on all levels.  Pretty easy to see when the stage isnt your own life isn't it?

God has so been present in our involvement with each of the families and many others on our walks.  He has lead us to a place of absolute sifting this summer.  We are being shown so many areas of our lives that He expects us to give up or to change how we handle.  We are glad, for each step, which are always hard for me personally....within days I have been released from fear, from worry, from overthinking the issues to death.  I simply look for and wait for peace before I move forward.  As a toddler in this, I know that there will be disobedient days and God will once again set me straight.  I had one of those moments yesterday as I was called to stand firm against someone attacking my family verbally and potentially in other ways.  When after 18 years I stood up to him, he immediately stepped back.  Amazing.  That is God.  For this person has had serious issues and standing up to him usually means a huge emotional scene.

Why is it we cannot trust God in all things. Why does our humanness always involve taming our wills and surrendering our plans to Jesus...you'd think after the facts of the Bible...it would be an easy course, but ole self sure holds out until the end some moments of our lives.

God is good.  The more time I am purposefully finding to refresh my mind in Him, the better my life becomes.  God help me to always run to and trust Him.

The History of Aprons

 Aprons

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was
to protect the dress underneath, but along with that,
it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears,
and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs,
fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs
to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were
ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma
          wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow,
bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen
          in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples
that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road,
it was surprising how much furniture that old apron
could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch,  waved
her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in  from the
         fields to dinner

It will be a long time before someone invents something  that
will replace that 'old-time apron' that served
          so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know,
and love the story about Grandma's aprons.

          REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies
on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

THANKS NANCY, THIS IS TOO CUTE.

It is great to have RaeAnne home.  She had a great time.  Her favorite day was when they went to the beach.  She tried riding the Boogie board.  She also got to be buried in the sand.

RaeAnne also brought home a great game called Blink.  It is fun and you have to think fast.

We are staying inside today.  It is suppose to be up to 106º or 108º today.  So far, the house is only 71º inside.  We ran the swamp cooler last night and then closed everything up this morning.  I did run into town this morning to get a few things for groceries and Harold needed some things for a solar panel for the shower house.

Tonight we are going to make pasties for supper.  We will also have a fresh garden salad and veggies.

Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

'Your son is here,' she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile..

He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

'Who was that man?' he asked.

The nurse was startled, 'He was your father,' she answered.

'No, he wasn't,' the Marine replied. 'I never saw him before in my life.'

'Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?'

'I knew right away there had been a mistake,

but I also knew he needed his son, and his

son just wasn't here.

When I realized that he was too sick to tell

whether or not I was his son,

knowing how much he needed me, I stayed.'

The next time someone needs you ...... just be there. Stay.

Last night on the way home from the airport we got to watch a wonderful display of the fireworks at the God and Country rally.  We didn't see all of them, but we saw at least the last 5 minutes.  As we went by where the event was held, the grand finale was finishing up.  The kids enjoyed watching them also.  It is good to have RaeAnne home.  She enjoyed her time with her cousins and aunt and uncle.
