ANother mad running day here. We made it to one library to get my card barcoded (state thing). I did happen to ask the lady if she knew of a thrift store other than Goodwill (Sorry, just not a fan). Sure enuf, basically right across the street is one! AND I found Mat camo pants (he needed something to get trashed paintballing at church camp) and Wed happens to be spin the wheel and get % off so I walked out w/2 pair of pants (JOey wanted some camos and they had his size) for $2.40!!!! Then we go to the other branch cuz that's where the playaways are. WRONG! So BACK across town the 1st library (thanked the lady who told me) and check out and set off hte alarm. HUH? Go back and you aren't supposed to take the plastic cases. Really? Cuz the other library let me. So while they were bad-mouthing the other branch (I bit my tongue HARD since it was THEIR branch who told me that most of the playaways were at hte other branch to begin with!), I asked if I needed to bring in the one we already got.  Yes. SHeesh! All of that for some free stuff!LOL I supposedly can now d/l books on my MP3 tho so as long as that works, I'm going to get over this entire fiasco.

Then to Rally's for their .69 hotdogs/cheeseburgers/shakes. Then to the free math program. I managed to get a Wii charger for $16 (and I fixed the Wii this am!!!!!!!!!) so those are charging and I get my rechargable batteries back! I also wondered thru Target since I had time to kill. Found a cute top that will match those orange wedges I had to buy for the Father's Day speech (Hopefully DH doesn't catch on to this!LOL). Next week, I'm goign to TJ Maxx.

I picked the boys up adn off to the cultural center w/the free passes from the library. They had a cool animal exhibit and still had the canning one that I love. I totally forgot to get our probiotics, but oh well. We get home, unload, reload f0r baseball and soccer and headout. I drop Joey off and get about 1/2 way to tennis when the instructor called to cancel. I was a bit torqued cuz the weather is SO NICE and we'll reschedule is wretched heat. Plus I had to go to town anyway to return the cultural passes and get a book on reserve. So back to get JOey and DH had made the taco meat so we did get to eat.

Now I get to pick up stuff and get ready to mop and vacuum and do all the laundry, get my goat share, and pack to leave tomorrow night.

I'm tired just thinking of all of this........

• 2009-Jun-30 - Heat, a Recipe and Summer News

Posted By The Farmer's Daughter

Once again morning has came to "Old Crow Farm" bring the heat with it.    While blessed with a break in the humidity since Saturday evening, it's till to hot for my liking.     I look out my window at my flower gardens that so desperately need weeding and then decided to turn my head the other way.~~~It's not worth having a 'clean' garden if it means being out in that heat.
Being stuck in the house does have it's advantages....It's the perfect time to try out some new recipes.    For weeks I've been wanting to try out a recipe called "Spinach Shrimp Fettuccine" and yet for some reason kept putting it off.   I finally decided yesterday was the day it was going on the menu.    I knew when I started it the two little ones wouldn't eat it so decided to grill them shrimp.   This way we would all be happy.
When I cook I try never to spend more than $5 on meat for any given meal.  (Okay, truth be told, I try to keep the whole meal under $5.00!)   This recipe stretched the budget but the raves I got from Keith were worth it.   I have to admit, served with a crusty bread it looked like a meal you would have ordered in a high dollar restaurant.    We have decided we'll definitely be doing it again and I decided to share it in case some of you would like to try it too.

                                            Spinach Shrimp Fettuccine

1# uncooked Fettuccine                                                 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 pkg. (6 oz.) baby spinach                                           1/2 t. Italian Seasoning
4 garlic cloves, minced                                                  1/4 t. salt
2 T. Olive Oil                                                                    1/4 Cup Parmesan Cheese, shredded
1# uncooked shrimp

Cook Fettuccine.   While cooking~~In a large skillet sauté the spinach & garlic in oil for 2 minutes or until spinach begins to wilt.     Add shrimp, tomatoes, Italian Seasoning & salt, sauté for 2-3 minutes or until shrimp turns pink.    Drain Fettuccine & add to skillet, toss to coat.    Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.  8 Servings.

Like most of you, we too are getting ready for our Fourth of July party.    We've done this for the past thirteen years and for the first time ever, it's not being held on the Fourth.   My youngest sister is coming in from Louisiana and won't be in until the evening of the Fourth so we've decided to hold it on the fifth.   Even though that gives me an extra day to get ready,  I'm definitely going to need it.    The last I heard there is a chance of rain on the Fourth so that means it's a "wait & see" situation. ~~~ Will it cool down enough to be held outdoors (Therefore meaning we'll have to wait until the last minute to put the tent and tables up) or will we all be crammed in this little house?   If it's the least bit hot, it's being held inside.   We'll have four people here over 82 years of age and two of them have bad hearts.    I'm not taking any chances with anyone's health just because it means we'll be stacked on top of one another!!!!
We're also down to a little over two weeks until our son gets married.   Are we ready?   Absolutely NOT!!!!   Drew still hasn't been fitted for his tux and I don't have a dress!   Nothing like waiting until the last minute!   I'll be so glad when it's over and my life is mine again.
Last Friday Jeni had another dental appointment in Topeka so we got to hit a few more yard sales.   Remember how I said I would find the perfect rug for our enclosed deck?    Well, Friday I found it!   I know we'll probably only get one season out of it but for $3 I can afford to get a new one next year!   See why I love yard sales so much???
Well girls, it's time to fix my crew some breakfast so I best head for the kitchen.   I hope your all enjoying your summer and staying cool.   Hugs, Sher

• 2009-Jun-29 - yardwork.......

Posted By Dana in daily life
Since Joey was sleeping, I decided to be lazy, too. Of course skipping the 30 min 8am workout, means doing the hour long 9am so I'm not sure how lazy that is.......LOL But I started laundry, did that workout and Joey stumbled down at almost 10. I made a call after that workout, got out bfasts and we started trimming hedges. I realized that if I did all my yardwork today, then I'd have hte next 2 weeks off. So I weeded around the house and pool all while doing 4 loads of laundry. I finally got to sit down about 1:30. But everyone has clean sheets, towels and clothes and the yard is somewhat decent. Now I can catch up online until mom calls for me to pick up Mat.

• 2009-Jun-28 - a trip to clean up the river!

Posted By Dana in daily life
We survived the river. It was actually pretty fun. The kids all got kayaks, which wound up being great cuz they could get in places that the canoes could not. We collected a whole plethora of junk from the rive. We dropped in about 11:30 and got out about 3:30. Then we set up camp and Mat stayed w/the youth until they left that night. Last night was not pretty, but we are in our own beds tonight so that will make up for that. It was VERY nice weather wise at least. We got things under control and went geocaching. We found 5 of hte 6 that we tried for. I thought that was incredible given that the trees really block GPS signals (making much more guess work), I had a borderline migraine, Joey and I were the only ones who had read the clues and that was 2-3 days ago, this isn't really DH's 'bag' and Mat was cranky!ROTFL!!!!!!!!! So then we met my family for lunch and went back to their house to get stuff out for the parade and came home. I'm doing river clothes and sheets cuz they STANK (well the clothes did--I just want the sheets back in the popup!LOL).

• Fri 26 Jun 2009 - Time stand still for no one

Posted By Da Mamma in Simplified
It has been over a year since I've blogged here.  I can't believe its been that long.  I see several of my friends no longer have blogs and I'll need to do some housekeeping.  I've missed the community but can't say I've been blogging a whole lot in general.  I've been keeping up with my knitting but  blogging fell by the wayside unitl recently.

I'm off to tidy up some around this blog-o-sphere and see who is left that I know.  Then I'll hunt around to make new friends.  I'm sure there are several of you out there that I'd love to meet. ;)

• 2009-Jun-23 - We're At Triple Digits~~~~

Posted By The Farmer's Daughter
Oh my gosh, is it ever HOT in our neck of the woods!    This afternoon we hit triple digits and while tomorrow is suppose to be a few degrees cooler, it doesn't show any sign of letting up for over a week.   Normally by this time of day our little ones would have been in the pool at least once but not today.   While our pool gets a little shade early of a morning by afternoon we're in full sun.   No way can they go out there now.
So, at this point we are all stuck in the house....Or the "cave" as Keith prefers to call it since he think it's that dark in here.    To bad, there is no way I'm having those blinds open and the sun pouring in.   That poor air conditioner verily shuts off the way it is, if the sun was streaming in it never would! ~~~ Not to mention I would have an electric bill I'd never be able to pay.
Yesterday while in town I picked up a couple of six packs of flowers that had been marked down to $1.00 each and they were really needing planted.   I knew I could never take the heat so I decided they were going in pots and I'd plant them in the coolness of this house.   I covered the kitchen table with newspapers and while I had dirt everywhere, my plants are now planted and I didn't die planting them!HA
Girls, if there is one thing I could talk each of you into buying it would be one of the little toaster ovens.   Not the super small ones but one that is big enough to actually bake in.   We bought ours last Summer when it was so hot and I swear I have almost wore it out with use.~~  This morning I let Jeni take a Chocolate Cake Mix and make it into two small cakes.  (A large pan is to big for the oven.)  One            will be used tonight for supper with vanilla ice cream and a chocolate sauce and the other one will be for tomorrow nights supper.   { We'll probably frost it.}    We are now baking  Lasagna in it.   I really hated the thought of doing something so 'heavy' on such a hot night but Keith loves it and that's what he wanted so I said I'd do it.
Jeni and I have spent the better part of our day pouring over recipes.    It's so nice to have a daughter who likes to cook and she sure has her own ideas about what we should fix....The cake and chocolate sauce were her idea! HA   Tomorrow we're planning on Spinach Parmesan Linguine.   For some reason that really sounds good to me.
Well, it's time to do our family reading and then I'll finish supper up....I love eating early so the evening is free.    Everyone please stay as cool as possible...People are dying from this heat!  Hugs, Sher

• 2009-Jun-22 - Lessons of Life

Posted By The Farmer's Daughter
Yesterday on my way home from my parents, Jeni and I picked up our local newspaper.   ( We live in a small town so this little paper only comes out twice  a week.)   Last night after my young'uns were all in bed I finally had the time to sit down and read it.
There was a small article how our local food pantry/clothing store was in need of food now that Summer is here and children are out of school.   I'm ashamed to admit this~~~ While I have gave both food and money to this store I have never been in it.  (I always gave when others were collecting.)     While we certainly aren't rich we have been Blessed more than we deserve and we have always had a full pantry.   I decided it was time to pay back some of these Blessings.
Bright and early this morning before the heat rolled in, Jeni and I went shopping.    I explained to her how others weren't as fortunate as we are and how we needed to buy things that a Mother/Father could use to feed their family.    Within minutes of being in that store she caught on and together we quickly filled up a grocery cart, buying everything from food to paper products.
We then went down to the store and had a humbling experience.      The store building has been donated from one of our local banks (God Bless Johnny!) and I was amazed how it was laid out.   Not only was it neat and clean but clothing was divided into "sizes" so a person knew just where to go to find what their family needed.   You honestly felt as though you were in a real clothing store!
The food part was right behind the counter and my heart sank when I saw how little was on the shelf.   Years ago I worked for an agency that provided food for those in need and we always just filled up bags with food according to the number in the family.    My sister had been in this store at Christmas when a family came in and she said they first checked to see if they had gotten anything in the last six months and then they were given a choice of a few canned goods.     Now I'm not sure it's still ran this way but with as many people out of work and on unemployment it probably is.    And for no more food than they had on hand, I can see why they have to do this.
I'm sure the twenty plus sacks we brought in helped but I also know it didn't make near the dent that was needed.    Coming home Keith and I sat down and discussed what we can do to help.    From now on, each time we go to Topeka, we'll be buying for us and others.    If everyone would just spend a few dollars a week, in no time at all the shelves would be full and families would have the help they so desperately need in these trying times.    I urge you to check your food banks to see what you too can do.    Hugs, Sher

• 2009-Jun-22 - Father's Day 2009

Posted By The Farmer's Daughter
Yesterday was Father's Day and my day started off early getting a roast in the crock pot so Keith could have his favorite meal for lunch.      Once I got it started, Jeni & I loaded up and headed to my parents farm.
Driving along we had the radio playing and there was a little commentary for Fathers...."A father heard his little boy praying that he would be just like his Daddy when he grew up.   That evening the father prayed he'd be half the man his little boy thought he was."     I was reminded of my father.     While not a dad to show emotion to us girls, he's Daddy.    Solid, strong, always there and always fair and honest.   At 83 (He'll be 84 in August) his health is failing.    It was so noticeable when we arrived at the farm.   Once he would have bound out of his chair and came into the kitchen to talk.   Now he verily lifts his head to acknowledge we're there.     While I know he doesn't feel good I feel part of his problem is depression.   Always one to be out and going he's now stuck at home.    It breaks my heart and we can only pray with rest and the right diet (Found Mom wasn't giving him enough water....He's down to 1500 cc's and the poor guy was getting less than 500....Again, she's elderly and didn't understand.) he'll some how or other be able to regain some of his strength.
As the morning wore on he did kind of perk up and even came out to the table so he could hear the story I was telling about the "Trooper" who called wanting a donation for the widow of police officers.   Dad rolled when he heard how I gave that stupid man a tongue lashing for starting his call out, "Mrs. So-So, this is Trooper So-So.   Now I'm sure you know that nothing is wrong!".....Nothing WRONG....I have elderly parents, eight kids, five grand kids and you start a phone call of with "This is Trooper So-So"????  I'll bet that man never calls again.   Daddy said I got worked up just telling the story, he can imagine what I must have been like to the man! HA    It was so to see him laugh and act like his old self.
Tomorrow my Mom has an appointment to have her hair done.    If Dad friend Bob doesn't come out, either Keith or I will be going over to stay with him.    I know he hates us being there (A sign that we don't want to leave him alone) but he never left us girls home alone when we were young and we're not going to leave him or Mom either.
As hard as this is on my parents (It's hard on Mom trying to take care of him) it's not near as hard as the thought of giving him up.   So today we'll be thankful Father's Day 2009 found Daddy still with us and we'll continue to pray we'll have many more years with him and Mom.   Sher

• 2009-Jun-21 - A tribute to my dad..

Posted By Dana in Gods blessings

I was asked to talk about my dad at church today and this is basically what I said:

As most of you know, I am Dana and my dad is Danny. Growing up we thought he was the smartest, bravest, nicest dad there could be! He showed us by living this out.

His kindness and compassion were shown by the many things we saw him do for others. He's gone on many mission trips--local and abroad. He even went on many of these trips with his family--including his wife, all of his children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law and even some of his grandchildren. He's always been ready to lend a helping hand and give ppl the clothes off his back. And on the days that he dresses himself, we really wish he would. There truly is a market for garanimals for adults.

Excluding his dog Caleb (a dog truly like his owner), he doesn't really extend this kindess to animals tho. I'm sure the mice that he and his buddies attached to rockets and shot off were not happy. What he did to his barn cats growing up makes me cringe. He could chase a snake w/a lawnmower w/the best of them. However the snakes exacted revenge one time when dad decided to couple his love of canoeing w/wanting to help the boy scouts clean up the river. A snake fell out of a tree into my dad's canoe. My dad is not a fan of snakes and did not take kindly to this invasion. We couldn't believe that he didn't jump out of the boat!

He is a great story teller. One of our favorites was about the woofenwafus. My mental image of it is slightly different than others, but it was sort of a greenish looking small animal w/huge ears. It lived in the woods behind us and when we would hear the trunk squeak while going over railroad tracks, dad always told us that meant the woofenwafus had gone for a ride w/us! The woofenwafus could do amazing things according to my dad.

And for the longest time, we thought my dad's idea of a good time was to pick rocks from fields or to walk them and hack down giant weeds. There was the one time that we went to a local festival and were allowed to ride a ride. I was the one elected to fish the car keys out from under the ride when all of dad's pockets were emptied going upside down.

Dad was also very intelligent. We sometimes question that, but......... While attending high school, he came up w/a math formula that his teachers could not find a flaw with. So they sumbitted it to Purdue, where they did disprove it. I'm certain tho that if he'd gone to (our hometown school), it would've never had to be sent to Purdue.

And of course, our dad was brave. Being a telephone repair man might not sound like a dangerous job, but it was. He had to deal w/dogs, stinging insects, domestic disputes (that sometimes included gunfire), and even having to once retrieve his screwdriver from an alligator. He's also an air force veteran. One of our yearly visits was to the Air Force museum in Dayton. He really knew how to do up Spring Break. However his air force experience did not prepare him for the aerial assault that he endured one day. The aeronautical tactics were like nothing he'd ever seen before. The trees left little in the way of cover and the terrain was horribly rocky. He said that he would get a few feet, fall, flail to fend off his attacker, manage to regain his footing, only to make it a few feet and repeat the process. He managed to knock his attacker down and thought he was in the clear, when it regained consciousness. The battle raged for 10-15 minutes. He was very bloody and beat up looking by the time it was over. When we saw him, we couldn't believe it. (pause) Now normally a trip from the barn to the house isn't nearly that harrowing, but dad isn't normally being chased by a bumble bee! However, like any good story, it's the twist at the end that you don't see coming--neither did my dad or the bee!

We've learned many lessons from our dad. Most of them good. But we knew that God gave us the perfect dad for us.

(The twist at the end is that while he was flailing around on the ground trying to fend off the bee, his boot flew off and killed it!!!!! I mean what are the odds?????LOL)

• 2009-Jun-20 - nice Saturday

Posted By Dana in daily life

Nice day here. We slept in!!!!!!!!!!! What a concept!LOL Got up and moving nad worked out. Dh took Joey to the office (Dh was printing those pop can labels for our parade) and I took Mat to hte bank to cash his paycheck. We met up in town and had lunch and then went bowling. I think that's a record--the boys and I bowling 5 times this week!LOL Then eventually wound up back home. The boys swam and I labelled 4 cases of pop. I've got the jeep packed for tomorrow except for the 16lbs of hamburger that I browned for my sister. I also cut Dh and JOey's hair. DH is now at a truck pull. I'd love to know HOW on Mother's Day weekend, I suffered thru a pull and yet on Father's Day weekend he GETS to go?!??!

Speaking of, we actually finally got out of bed cuz the phone rang. The boy scout leader called wanting us to chaperone a canoe trip (to clean the river) next weekend! We had planned on going camping anyway (as I pointed out to a less than enthusiastic DH!LOL) and now it's free!LOL They must be pretty desperate cuz he even (w/o prompting) told DH that they will work around our schedule! Mat's done this before w/my dad and I know Joey would love it and they invited all of us. So I need to convince DH to call him back and tell him yes. The upside is that we'll be camping close to home so we can probably do some geocaching and see my family.;)
