After our visit to my dad's (now also our) accountant last night, I'm wondering why we didn't go to one sooner. He was great - walked us through all of our deductions, told us what to do for next year, and in the end sent us home with more then enough money coming to tide us over the summer and then some, though in reality it will all probably eventually go to replacing our aging roof in the early fall. It just feels great to not have to worry about any unexpected expenses this summer, though I am optimisitc about farm income with this new farmer's market. He also showed us two MAJOR mistakes from last year when we went to H&R Block, so since their prep is guaranteed we'll be headed over there next week to have them re-file last year's return.
The electo net fencing arrived from Kencove and so far I'm pretty impressed - the posts and stakes are nice and sturdy, the net thick and looks like it will hold up well. I even like the color :) I ordered green so that it wouldn't be too obtrusive out there, and it blends right in. We messed around with it a bit yesterday, but need to set it up in its "final configuartion" today, then we'll set up the solar charger and put the pigs in once it has a decent charge going. I'm hoping the sun comes out so we can finish removing the boards from the old raised beds and even it out to start planting - all of the brassicas have at least one set of true leaves and the onions and leeks are going great guns, so they are ready to go in.
We'll watch the pigs to see how they adapt to the electric fence and also re-introduce the wounded chicken in with her flock - her wounds have healed well, and I think she'll be less stressed back with everyone else. The poor rooster though - if he hadn't attakced me so many times I'd pity the poor guy, I guess after "letting" the flock get attacked that way he's sunk to the bottom of the totem pole, and the guinea trio has taken over - they let the hens do whatever, but god forbid the roo tries to move an inch. Oh well, hopefully they'll simmer down and then he'll be less likely to attack us in the future. We'll see. |
