The chickens were out in their new yard yesterday when I got home - E managed to put one of the latches on in the am before work. They seem to like their new digs - and the rooster appreciates being able to put his head through the wire gate to try to attack any unsuspecting passerby. He drives us crazy sometimes, but he is definitely a good flock guardian and doesn't beat up on the hens much at all. (He's a white leghorn)
The pigs were snoozing yesterday afternoon, but came out to eat - I alternate their lunch between kitchen scraps one day (vegetable trimmings and such) and pig chow the next. I do think they've already lost some weight, but I can't wait till they get skinny enough where we cna see their eyes and they are more comfortable. Poor obese pigs!
They just announced that they think there may be another bomb scare this afternoon - good grief! I have on two layers today, and I'm seriously considering grabbing the graduation robe from the coat closet as well if we head outside. My lesson plans are done and all the plants are watered, so that's one less thing to worry about. Looking at the greenhouse I don't think the Ichiban eggplant seed was still viable - I'm not sure of the storage length of eggplant seed. All the "Orient Express" came up at least. I'll give the Ichiban till Monday and then move over some sprouting kale or cabbage into the cleaned out cell packs. Tomaotes are going under the lights tonight, and then more on Monday and Tuesday. I can't wait to get some seeds in the ground, but the electric fence has to arrive from Kencove first! Peas, spinach, swiss chard, parsley, carrots, lettuce! I'm hoping to call Bob (old owner) and price out a new hoophouse for our existing pad - I was reading about soilless straw bale culture and if I can find organic straw, I think I'll try that in our greenhouse once we get it up and running. |
