Been Away for a Long TimeI have been away from my blog for far too long. The family and I have been working hard around the place getting weeds cut down, getting the gardens in shape, starting seeds and transplanting the seedlings when they are grown enough. In addition I have been working for my husband, that takes up so many hours of my day. With summer here the temperature has climed in to the 100's but our spring weather was lovely. We had lots of cool cloudy days and lots of rain for our area. I am looking forward to any produce we might be blessed. Not only that but I have been able to sell some of my homemade soap. Making more is on my To Do List, which just seems to be getting longer by the day. Now if I can figure out how to get these grasshoppers to leave! I hope your spring and summer have been full of all the blessings you could hope for. Now I must go and move the water hose to another rose bush. Thank you for stopping by and have a good day. Buried TreasuresMany years ago I had a subscription to Victoria Magazine. Oh, what beautiful treasures I found in my mail every month. I started my subscription in August 1988 and kept it going until December 1996.When I got to be a very busy mom, home teaching, raising chickens and goats, I packed away my old Victoria Magazines and cancelled my subscription. I was far too busy to spend my days gazing over such lovelies as I saw in those magazines. ![]() Now, that my family is mostly raised, I can bring out my old magazines and once again look at the lovely pictures and re-read the articles that were so fascinating to me all those years ago. It is like having a new subscription and I will have more time to glean information from the articles and have better abilities to try some of the recipes and decorating ideas that are presented. Not only will I be rewarded by a visit with some old friends but my girls will have the magazines to look through also. I can hardly wait to share the magazines and the ideas that this resourse will add to our home life. Buried treasures indeed. A Wonderful AnniversaryIt was 24 years ago, on this date, that I went to a doctor in Phoenix, Arizona, to help me quit smoking. I think the fact that it cost $200.00, that was lots of money to us, made a big contribution to the fact that I did, finally, quit.I had some rough times getting used to not having my smokes. I did gained some weight and I didn't know how to go about losing it, but I have since learned and am back to my pre-smoking weight. The good things that have come about by not smoking are worth noting: ![]() I have three very healthy and happy grown up children, they have never smoked and I pray never will. They were never exposed to secondary smoke, nor were they exposed to smoking while I was pregnant. I am a healthy 50 years old, and I don't smell like an old smoked up cigerette. My house, car, and clothes don't smell either. I have not suffered any smoking related illnesses since quitting. I have learnt a great deal about self discipline from quitting smoking, I think that might be one of the most important lessons of all. Thank you for stopping by. Back on TrackIt is time for me to get back on track with my weight.Last year, on December 8, I reached my goal weight of 133. I was, quite honestly, thrilled. Since then I have maintained my weight loss but for 5 pounds. My weight is at 138 and I don't want to lose control and add back the 30 plus pounds that I lost. Today, I rededicate my efforts to loosing the 5 pounds that I have gained. We are almost past all the birthdays and celebrations that require a large meal or treat, just one birthday left on the 20th of December and then I will not have the job of making and eating lovely, sweet snacks for the family. I am using Spark People to help me track my food, water, exercise and weight loss. The site was a wonderful help last year and I expect to get the same results this year. I think it should take between 4 - 8 weeks to get the weight back off. I am excited about getting back to my routine of healthy living. Home AgainRobert and I made a whirlwind trip to Phoenix at the end of October. We rented a van on the 24th, took the kids to town for some fun on the 25th, and on 26th we headed for Phoenix. It takes us about 10 hours to drive, I am always glad to rent a vehicle because we, usually, get satelite radio. Since I am always the passenger, I hardly ever get to drive, I need to be entertained. While in Phoenix, Robert worked and I got to catch up with a dear friend. She and I went for tea and then spent hours wandering around an antique mall that was close to my hotel. Oh, I had such a great time catching up with Cindy. She has been a good friend to me and my family for so many years. She gave me a gift too, this lovely tea cup: We got home from Phoenix on the 28th and on the 29th we did a major grocery shopping trip, that wore all of us out. On the 30th we went for a girls shopping trip and turned the rental van in. We are set for a couple of months before we have to venture out again.
I am so thankful for the work that we had, that we are home safe and that I had such a lovely visit with my dear friend. Now I have to get back to sewing and other craft projects and getting the house ready for the cold weather. First Day of Autumn![]() Nature XXVII, Autumn by Emily Dickinson The morns are meeker than they were, The nuts are getting brown; The berry's cheek is plumper, The rose is out of town. The maple wears a gayer scarf, The field a scarlet gown. Lest I should be old-fashioned, I'll put a trinket on. ![]() Homemaking Goals...returning to basicsThis month I have been focusing on relearning some homemaking habits. I had gotten lazy about doing certain chores around my house, and sort of expected others in the family to pitch in and help me with my work a little more than perhaps I should have. I choose three areas where I felt I needed improvement. They are:
It feels good to have made these small improvements in my life, and to see that my family is happy with the changes too. Another benefit is that the kids are cleaning up after themselves without having to be reminded, and that they don't leave the bath rooms in chaos. Are there areas in your homemaking, or job where you have gotten a little lazy? Maybe you can challenge yourself to work toward improvements in a few areas. Thanks for stopping by. Alway put off until tomorrow.... Procrastinators remorseI have a serious case of procrastination. There is a box of sewing and crafting projects that I really need to get finished. Is there a word for someone that starts projects and doesn't finish them, before starting another project? If there is, I am that person.I need to make a list of all the projects that are in the works and start working them off. Actually, there is a list but I haven't been working on the projects. What good is a list if I don't use it? Once again, I am determined to work off the list and get my box cleared out. It is going to take some time because the box has cross stitch and embroidery projects that are very involved. I'll start with the sewing first, I need that blue shirt where I can wear it, not look at it hanging on the garment rack. Off to work. Update: I finished the blue shirt!! I feel so much better. One thing off my list! Fun TimeI am a complete goose when it comes to doing anything with web design, but my oldest daughter, Sarah, is pretty savvy about HTML and graphics. She designed the banner, above, for me some time ago, it was to be for my web site, with one thing and another, it didn't get used there. We spent the better part of this afternoon getting a handle on how things worked behind the scenes here, tweeking colors and generally having a great mother/daughter time learning something new. There are some things that I would like to change already, I am hoping to put a tiled background up very soon. I found a design that I like and Miss Sarah has been instructed to work on changing a few things on it to make it perfect. Hopefully, we will have something else "new" to look at in the next week. Mostly, I have enjoyed working with my daughter on this, it is so much fun to share in one of her passions. Thanks for stopping by. Spring Time, Busy TimeGood Day,I haven't posted in such a long time. So many things, around the place, need attention in the spring time. I am on line every day but sometimes I just don't have anything great to say. Last week we had to put our Skipper dog down. She had been with us for 14 years and was very much loved. It was a sad day but we know that she doesn't hurt any longer and although we are sadden by the loss we knew it was time for her to rest. The gardens and orchard are cleaning up nicely. We have had to restart lots of seeds, I think the squirrels might be stealing from us. We have been live trapping the little fellows and relocating them to a near by creek, there are lots of trees for them to climb and play in. Here is a picture of a rose from my gardens to share with you: Thanks for stopping by. Have a lovely day. { Last Page } { Page 1 of 2 } { Next Page } |
