You should see the hole in our yard!

I have a huge hole in my back yard, the high side equaling around 24 ft tall. You might ask why we have such a hole in our yard. Well, we are building a root cellar.

I have wanted one for some time now, because we don't have a basement, and I would like a place to store certain items. I would like to store our canned goods there as well as our buckets of foods we buy in bulk. Of course it's also a great place to store root crops and ferment pickles and cabbage.

If you have one and could leave a comment on your success with your cellar I would greatly appreciate it.

My husband will start laying the footers as soon as the ground dries some. We already have some of the block and we hope to pick up the rest soon.

Happy Homesteading everyone!

Oh, who needs a root cellar. Put in a swimming pool instead and invite me over for the pool party! LOL

Just kidding!!! I remember the creepy root cellar my grandmother had when I was little. She stored alot of her homemade canning stuff there and it was also the emergency place in case there was a storm. I thank the God Lord there was never a tornado or big storm while I was staying with her in the summers. I was scared to go down there (dirt walls and stone steps), in the daytime to get a jar of peaches, let alone to go there at night in a storm with a flash light and a radio! LOL

God's Blessings,

A cellar is a wonderful thing! :-) Our family has one, mostly for canned goods, bulk foods and potatoes.

One thing I have noticed about a cellar is that it needs to be "kept" just like one needs to keep the house. Otherwise, it will become quite messy and you won't want to go in it. Especially after a mice infestation.
