I didn't get my walking in yesterday, so I put in 90 minutes today. It's interesting walking the road sides. Some of the ditches or right-of-ways are very wide. I wind up traversing them quite a bit. One can is up at the top, another is at the bottom. I never walk much of a straight stretch. Today I walked what seemed to me to be a shorter distance, but I couldn't believe how many cans I found. I really should clock in on my speedometer. We've always called it the "S" Curves. I cleaned up the "S" and found 2 large white grocery bags brimming full of aluminum cans. I've learned to step on them and flatten them before I pick them up. I have a poker, so I can stab them if I need to, otherwise I just bend over and pick them up. The poker comes in handy for the cans that are embedded into the ground. I kept smashing the cans down into the bags too, because I only had 2 bags with me. I did have a smaller grocery bag and wound up with about 2 dozen cans in that as well. Twelve regular aluminum cans make 1 pound. Aluminum is 45 cents a pound here, so two dozen will almost make a buck! This has become a game for me, but I don't know if I can wait a whole month before taking them in. I don't really have a place to store them.
I am shocked and saddened by the trash along our beautiful roadways here. It just makes me sick.. By the time I got back to my car, someone had already thrown a beer can out their window in a spot I had just gone over. Unreal! People are just slobs.
