Living 8 miles from town means that any given trip to town can be a treat, just with what you see on the way. I was headed in last week and happened upon a small cattle drive. The neighboring rancher was moving several cow/calf pairs to another pasture. The calves were just under 2 days old. I know because I rolled down my window and asked. They were lumbering along in their newborn awkward state. Some of them needed a little nudge to keep going. One needed more than a nudge. He was the stubborn one of the bunch and the ranch hand had to push him down the road. The calf had "hit the breaks" and didn't want to go, so the ranch hand had place his hand under the calf's rear end, which in turn caused the calf to halt even more. In pushing the calf, his hind legs went up in the air and he was just walking with his front with the ranch hand pushing his behind. I told them it was cheap entertainment. They commented that it was one of those days where nothing was going as planned. Such is life when you're dealing with live animals.
I have the pleasure of seeing Bald Eagles every time I go to town. It doesn't matter the direction. There are still cattle ranches in both directions (for now) and the Bald Eagles come in to do the clean up after the cows give birth. That and an abundance of Richardson's Ground Squirrel, more commonly known here as gophers, keeps the eagles well-fed.
This year my highest count so far has been 8 eagles. One morning I passed an empty farmhouse and just above it in the trees were 6 eagles! Quite a site to see them all together. I happened to have my camera, but they were a distance away and the shot wasn't all that great. Plus, when you attempt to stop and take pictures of eagles, they fly off so you have to be quick. I attempted to resize the photo, but it wouldn't save, so here you are.

The Canadian Geese are pairing off and soon there will be little goslings following them about like a bright yellow snake. I haven't heard the Sand Hill Cranes yet, a true sign that spring has finally arrived. I haven't seen a robin either. Spring is on its way! |
