• Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - More on weaning goat kids and milking goats!

It has been a noisy two days here!  Since this is my first go at having goats, I didn't realize how noisy the kids would be when I weaned them.  I should have known because calves are noisy too.  I let my ewes wean their lambs naturally, so I have never had this problem.

I sold 2 wethers.  They are castrated males.  Since I had all of my goats in the barn, I decided to go ahead and separate them.  I was home alone and started the process of carrying each goat across the yard to the kennel we have behind the garage.  It has been used for many things.  This week it's a holding pen for goat kids!  As I was carrying them across the yard, some were more vocal than others.  One sounded like I was torturing it and I got to laughing I almost dropped the goat!  With my mission accomplished and all 4 kids in the pen, I came in the house to take a bath.  All of that crying going on out there!  Such a racket!  Then............suddenly everything became suspiciously quiet.  I went to the door to see why and they were all 4 out in the yard eating on the willow branch piles from the windstorm the day before!  So, out I go for a goat round up.  I was able to walk right up to two of them.  The third I lured in with willows and the forth, forget it!  She was not about to be caught.  I was planning to try and herd her back over to her mom and then out of nowhere comes our Airedale Terrier!  He put her on the run and right back in with mom.  Good enough for now!  I was able to grab her in the evening and put her in with the other kids.

So now I am milking 3 goats.  I have been milking twice each day, but I plan to go to just once a day starting today.  It may take a couple of days before their bags/milk production adjusts, but it will be much easier on me.  I enjoy milking in the mornings, but not in the evenings.  Mornings are much cooler right now and it just seems like a good way to start the day.

I have been making goat cheese with all of this milk.  It has been a lot of fun!  My son likes it, but my husband won't even try it.

Well, off to water the animals!  Stay tuned for a needle felted Corgi give away.  I want to see if anyone is actually reading my blog or if I am just blabbering online for the sake of my own sanity.

Blabber away dear!! LOL I found your post quite humorous and enlightening. I would LOVE to do the goat milking thing also. I don't have any goats right now though. I have been hinting at hubby that I miss our goats. We used to have goats as pets. And we just loved them. I wonder if I could find baby goats this time of year... hehe And as for drinking goat milk, I have never even tried it.. but I really like the idea of fresh milk for my daughter. I suppose we should try it to see if we even like it before we invest in goats. How much milk will you get in one day from your three goats do you think? And milking only once a day is ok for them? I was afraid it would be at least 2 times daily.

Hi LaVonne,
I am reading your blogs and enjoying them.
Has all of the noise from the goats calmed down yet? I am looking into pigmy goats, my parents neighbors had one for several years and just loved it. Do you know if they can be milked??
Please keep blogging.
