Thank You for the Welcome!I want to thank the commentors for their welcome. I knew when I found this blogging site that it was a friendly place. I'll be around to your sites tonight, hopefully. I've been spending the past two days reading a lot of your blogs and I'm very impressed at the "back to basics" so many of you practice. I know I'll learn a lot of new things from you.I've lived in the country all my life, but other than raising a garden, having chickens, canning and freezing, I live pretty much in the modern age. I want to get back to simpler home living than I currently am. I've also tried other things occasionally, like making a quilt years ago (that fell apart since I had no one to teach me!), crocheting afghans, etc., but it seems when my children were all home life always got in the way with everyday practices and ballgames and I used to work outside the home. But I see most of you homeschool, some work outside the home, and you still manage to do a lot of things from scratch. You're very busy women! But I can tell you really enjoy your home and life. My hubby has recently started having to deal with high blood pressure and now he's on meds for it. We have really had to change our lifestyle. I never realized how hard it is to find low or no sodium foods. We have been making some major changes in what we eat, but I need to make more so that maybe he can eventually get off the meds. I've found I enjoy this challenge of eating healthier. I've outlawed things like luncheon meats, bacon, sausage, ham, pork and red meat, and salty snacks. Now I always have a whole chicken or turkey roast cooked in the crock pot to use for sandwiches. We eat fish several times a week (it's a good thing we love fish!). I told hubby it's untelling how smart we'll be, eating all that "brain food"! I fried turkey burgers from ground turkey tonight for dinner and they were actually good! We are also cutting down on fats (I had already been doing this to lose weight, along with drinking Slimfast twice a day, and I've lost 11 pounds in 6 weeks. Yay me!!) We switched from 2% milk to ultra skim, mainly because I drink at least 3 glasses a day to protect my bones since I'm postmenopausal. Switched from our brown eggs (I have 5 hens and it's a shame we end up giving most of their eggs away now) to Egg Beaters. We will still occasionally eat a regular egg. Hubby used to eat bacon and eggs every morning, although I begged him to go easy on it. Now he eats oatmeal every morning with whole wheat toast. We've both done a lot of damage to our bodies over the years eating fast food, junk food, and greasy foods, and not paying attention to healthy eating in general. We're 49 years old, but maybe we can still "clean" our bodies out and add a few years to our lives! I've also started drinking 4 oz of red wine everyday. Have you ever looked online at all the benefits of red wine? It's amazing! It is supposed to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, help prevent some types of cancer, Alzheimers (which I think maybe I've already got a good start on!), and the list goes on and on. It isn't a good idea for hubby to drink it because of his meds. I plan on dragging my bread machine out and attempt to make whole wheat bread. The mixes you buy for the machines contain a lot of sodium, as does cake mixes. Does anyone have a good recipe from scratch for this? Any more ideas I can incorporate into our diet to reduce sodium? And has anyone tried "sea salt"? Is it better to use than table salt when you absolutely have to use it? I'm off to read some more of your blogs. Sarah Thank you Lord, for giving me this day!
