Homemaking Homesteader

Wednesday On the Homestead

03:06, 2007-Feb-7 .. 8 comments .. Link

I did not end up going into town after all..  I had lots to do at home and figured we would last another day.. Tobin took a day off today and was able to work on things too

I made 2 batches of soap.  My girls all left and went into town to do their shopping so it was just the boys at home..  seemed rather quiet and nice and I was able to focus on my soap making.

One of the soaps I made was another batch of my men’s shaving soap.  I make it in 4oz jars and the soap is used in the jar with an old fashioned shaving brush.  I ran out of this soap just with in the last couple of days, so I was glad to have a chance today to make some more.

Here is a picture of the soap shortly after I poured it into the jars:

Also on Monday Emily and I had made another quilt square and here is a picture of that one:

With our busy week so far we have not had another chance to make any more squares .. but maybe Thursday or Friday we can make a couple more.

And one last picture to post..  On Monday I made some sauerkraut and it has been sitting on my counter fermenting since then.  Tomorrow I put in the fridge.  It will technically be done but I find the taste improves a lot with time.  I added a grated carrot and a little bit of sliced red onion to my kraut..  I really love homemade sauerkraut!  Soon I will be posting on my fermenting food experiences and what I have found to work the best for me and sharing how to do it so  you can try your hand at it too (unless of course you already are doing it ).

That’s all for Wednesday on the Homestead..

I remember my aunt making kraut and it would sit for two weeks on her cabinet and stink up the whole house. LOL
Yours looks better tho.

Looking good!

Hi Crystal,

I love your Ohio star blocks, one of my favorite blocks. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.

love, Ellen

shaving stuff

I bought my husband your shaving soap for Christmas. He said it worked "fine" and then we bit the bullet and bought a badger hair brush, the real deal kind. Now he says your stuff is "amazing" and feels great. Just thought you might like to hear that a better brush makes a better product. :-)

Hi

I just wanted to comment on your quilt squares. They look so nice. I decided to try to quilt around last Christmas and still have yet to do even 1 square. You have inspired me to get on the ball and get started. Thank you!

Just a note to say thanks for taking the time to blog and give us inspiration to do more around our home!
I have been a long time reader and member of the message board but have had to cut way back on my activity in the last year. I sitll read your blog at least 3 times a week. I love keeping up with you and your children and all they are involved in. It helps me to sit back and relax sometimes to read about another mother with many children who share some of the same desires and hobbies and how you actually get it done or dont get it done sometimes ! ~ smile~
I wish I could send you a big bunch of fresh flowers to let you know I appreciate you and all you are doing for others out there.
Be sure and tell Tobin thanks too. He has more a part in this than anyone will know. I know you would not do all you do with the wide web world without his blessing!
Have a great day !
Stefanie

Quilting

Each of your quilt blocks look very nice. You are doing a very good job of making the points match up.
I really like this one the colors are so pretty.

I have been quilting every day here lately. Your daughter inspired me to start a habit of it. She had a post about breaking habits and I decided then I would start a habit of quilting every day.My goal is at least 15 min a day.
We had a busy day on Mon. we were in town all day running errands. I kept my quilting on my lap while I drove around. At each stop light I would get a few stitches in. Then the girls would run in to each place, the post office, the store ect,etc.... and I sat in the van and quilted. It is a great way to get your quilting time in.
