Building A Homestead in Nicaragua

Move to paradise and build the home of your dreams. It's a line you'll hear often in this part of the world. Now for a bit of reality. Life is no easier in Nicaragua, depending on what you're trying to accomplish, than it is any part of the world. The sense of time, or the lack of it, and work ethic makes the logistics of building here a head shaking, exasperating experience that can only be handled with patience, lots of patience, and a goal firmly in sight.

There is much beautiful land to see and buy in this Central American country, but much of it is a wild, wild west adventure. It's basically a pre-English law state situation and prospective buyers should be a hardy breed. That said, we couldn't be happier with our purchase of almost 100 acres of land at 200 feet above sea level on Nicaragua's isthmus. Have we been through the wringer since buying? 'Como no' as they say down here, or 'Of course'!

Will we reach our goal?

Como No!!!

Hey Linda!
We always celebrate Thanksgiving as we feel we have much to be thankful for! It's possible to find turkey here, even Butterball, but they cost an arm and a leg! Last year, we celebrated with Nica and Peruvian friends and introduced them to fried turkey, squash casserole, sweet tater pie, the works. I even made them watch football with me, but I think they liked the food better than the ballgame.

Oh I can imagine! Life is so oooo different in latin america..... the whole idea of "tomorrow" is so different......... tomorrow could be tomorrow or it could be a week away or a month away... I could think that it would be challening to get a home built...... it takes forever for anythig to get done in latin america! Their sense of time is sooooooo different!

With that said --- I miss the slowness of life -- how the locals enjoy life and take time for community and each other.... vs. the american rush rush all the time........ I do miss it and would not hesitate to live there!

In fact we prayed about moving the family to guatemala -- but the crime is so bad and our girls that are very fair -- well we felt it would be so unsafe for them as they grew up........

Blessings,
gloria

Yes Gloria, it's very different here, as you know. I'm a redhead and pale as can be. Shoot, it takes me weeks in the sun just to get flesh tone! As a "chile", I get lots of stares and hands being held out for money. Locals think all white folks are rich. Sheesh, I wish!
