Quiet Life Homestead

Thursday Evening

Okay, so I got a bit worried about Dallas' schooling when he took the practice ASVAB and have spent the past few days trying to get my ducks in a row adding this here and that there.  I never could get it all straight in my head and couldn't figure out why.  Now I know.  God has been quietly whispering to me and I have not heard.  Well, obvously He's tired of waiting for me to get it into my thick skull that He's trying to tell me something.  He, once again, had to put something right in front of my eyes for me to see.  He's been leading me to various verses and even some truths in the books I'm reading right now, but I didn't get it.  Well, today on one of the Yahoo groups I'm on (the Robinson one) there were - I didn't count so please forgive me - about 6-7 entries about not worrying and just following with the 3R's.  Saying to not get afraid and add anything, etc.  It was just like, BOOM!, hitting me on the head one after another.  Needless to say, we're not going to add anything.  We're going to continue on with our homeschool, I actually like what SisterLori said "homeskill," and not worry about it.

Keep us in your prayers.  The boys like to play football outside in the afternoons, sometimes with Bethany and sometimes without her.  From time to time, some of the neighborhood boys come and play with them - no big deal, I just keep an ear out.  Well, two girls who have played with them in the past have recently been flirting BIG TIME with the boys, especially Dallas.  In fact, one propositioned to show him a part of her upper anatomy (if you catch my drift).  I asked what he said back to her and he said that he turned around and just ignored her.  In fact, before I knew what had happened he told me that if the girls came by and asked if they could play I was to answer that they were doing schoolwork or taking a nap.  I thought that sounded a little odd out of a 15 year old and the above is what I found out was why.  I've spoken to others about this and they don't think its such a big deal.  I want my children to be as pure for their future spouses as possible and want to avoid any influences such as these in their lives.  Anyway, prayers/advice would be appreciated.

I think I'll go work on Cody's afghan.  I'm doing a treble stitch and am on the last (finally!) ball of yarn.  I've just about given up posting pictures on here, but will let you know if I do.  Lastly, we noticed today that one of Charlie's leather art projects is gracing the front page of the international leather guild's Yahoo site.  If you want to check it out (hopefully its still there it will say Charlie Davenport) the address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iilg-members/  Also, he spoke with the publisher of The Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal and his cover is on this next issue and the article is in there as well.  Our copies will be sent from the printer directly today or tomorrow.  He just finished making a half-size saddle and is now in the process of making a full-size saddle.  That's a lot of cutting with a really nasty sharp knife (he almost sliced his finger off with it when we lived in Michigan) so keep him in your prayers as well!

The recruiter, that my daughter is talking with, told us that there is a lot of math on the ASVAB. A lot of algebra......
He told her that the higher her ASVAB score the greater the job opportunities, training, and better pay.....
The recruiter said the Army is 'homeschool friendly' BUT if my daughter enlisted, I would need to provide a 'professional with the Army' my 'cirriculum' so that they can determine if what I have exposed her to is the same or greater than what she would have been exposed to in PS or PRS. IF my cirriculum (I know I am spelling this wrong...too lazy to spell check) is equal to or tougher than that of the PS system they will give my daughter the same entry status of "High School Graduate". IF my cirriculum is not equal to, but lesser than the public school system, they will give her the entry status of "GED", which is the lowest........They determine what is equal to / lesser than.

He said because we "school at home" and we have all their text books (Apologia / Chalkdust Math / Abeka) that my daughter should be just fine.
It sounds like to me what they are looking for are "school at home" types. They don't understand the 'eclectic' style, it is too foreign to them. It "appears" from the conversations the recruiter and I have had is they want to see 'text books / lab books / PSAT , ACT and SAT scores.

Having said that; my daughter is math and science strong, but not sure now this is the avenue she wants to pursue.
Could be God speaking to both of us, only in different ways?

I wouldn't worry or fret.........If the Military is where the Lord wants the boy, then when he is exposed to Algebra, he will gobble it up like a hungry puppy!!

*****Thanks Laura for the encouragement! I don't know what hoops they've had to go through, but I do know of three boys who are now Marines who used the Robinson Curriculum. I've been keeping flexible records - mainly just lists of what we've used throughout, though I know what we use these next three years is the most important. I've told Dallas about the opportunities the Marine Corps offers as far as MOS, but he's grown up with Charlie's stories of being a grunt (enlisted in the infantry), all the places he's been to, and all the "fun" stuff they got to do. That's what Dallas wants and nothing will change his mind. Very frustrating when we want the best opportunities for our kids. Well, maybe the infantry will be best for him, I should just move out of the way and let God work! LOL

To me the most important thing that happened with the girl is that your son ignored her. That's awesome from a 15 year old with hormones. You have done a great job.
Blessings,

Blessings!
We have a boy in the Army. He was homeskilled and they had no trouble with it at all. Aside from my motherly worries about his safety, he assured me it was what the LOrd had called him to do. He is a field medic now and truly enjoys his job.
We printed out a diploma for him and gave them his final test scores for each of his four schooling years of highschool. They decided he didn't need his GED because he scored very well on his ASVAB.
We found it was truly easier to let go and let God. We realized that God didn't need to speak to us over this. He was speaking to our Son and we had to put our trust in that:)
As for the other, it IS a big deal! How sad for that girl, that she feels the need to share herself in such ways to get attention. I will pray for her.
Your son showed great restraint and godly behavior over it. The Father is greatly pleased I'm sure:)
We don't "date" here, our children "court". It's wonderful that you are raising your children to be godly people who will honor the Lord in their thoughts and actions. Keeping themselves only for their spouses one day.
We too have been blessed with this. Our son, will be married on April 12 of 2008 to the girl he has been courting for 2 years now. It will be nearly three when they wed. We are so excited:)
Keep up the good prayers. You have taught your son well:)
God be with thee!
