Long Time, No Blog

Sorry, my blogging lately has been few and far between.  Now that the temperature is starting to go down I hope to be able to come on here more often.  Dare I hope daily?

Dallas took a sample ASVAB test online this evening.  In case you don't know, ASVAB is the test you have to take and pass to get into the military.  He's wanting to follow in his dad's footsteps once he's 18 and join the Marine Corps.  Anyway, taking the sample test really showed me areas where we need to work on.  Once dinner was over, I came into the living room and started making out my "suppliments" list.  We're still doing Robinson plus some of our personal library books, but this is other stuff we need to be sure to cover more in-depth.  I still need to figure out how much needs to be done on a daily basis in order to reach our goals.  He wants to end when he's 17 (in two years) but I told him that 18 was more reasonable.  I don't have a problem with him finishing early and have encouraged it in fact.  I think I may write up two plans, one being a two-year plan and the other being a three-year plan.  On some of the subjects it is difficult to figure out how long to schedule, but we'll do it in pencil and play it by ear.  He's doing wonderfully in his MEP math, basically just blazing through level 7, which is good because I don't understand the curriculum.  I'll admit that I don't print out the lesson plans but do print out the answers.  I may at some point in the future, if need be, print out the lesson plans and let him read and follow them.  I gave up on the MEP for the younger two and put them back into Rod and Staff.  It may take them a bit longer to get finished, but I understand that curriculum and so do they.

Deanna was asking on her blog where we were six years ago.  I was in the kitchen homeschooling the kids (ages 11, 9, & 8 at the time) at my parent's home when my sister phoned me.  I spent the next hour or so watching (they had cable) CNN.  I turned off the television before the buildings collapsed because we didn't want to upset my father.  He wasn't watching the television and thus didn't know what was happening, but we were getting ready to bring him into the kitchen for a late breakfast.  I still have many feelings from that day from shock to anger that basically all run together.  The way the kids and I have tried to deal with what happened is by studying what happened, from books, movies, documentaries, etc., then discussing what we've learned.  For instance, tonight we watched NOVA's presentation about rebuilding on the site of the WTC.  Afterward during dinner, we discussed what we'd seen and things such as the merits of chaning or not changing building codes to include protecting against what happened.  Dallas answered that he'd require tall buildings to have special codes reflecting what the building industry has learned in regards to the terrorist attack.  Then the discussion turned to the question of how tall would the buiding have to be to merit these codes and how you can get into sticky stuff like if its needed for a 65 story building, why not a 64 story one, etc.

Lastly, please check out Glenn Beck's website, radio show, and television show the rest of this week.  I ment to come on here last week and let everyone know, but things came up.  He's been talking about something called the "Perfect Day."  It is basically what terrorists are planning on doing here in America and possibly even in England.  I will warn you that it is very disturbing.  The goal of what they want to do is to do something so horrific that we will sink to their level and start attacking Muslims and mosques.  The reason they want this to happen is so they will be able to use it as proof to others like them that we are in a holy war, so these other people will join them and cause even more awful things.  Please be informed.  www.glennbeck.com
