Quiet Life Homestead

Thursday: Laundry, Mosquitos, Baseball, Bread, Math Question, Etc.

Today will be a huge laundry day.  The boys changed their work schedule so that we can leave tomorrow instead of Saturday.  I need to call and let them know to expect us.  Back to laundry, the boys have a huge pile that needs to be done.  I'm going to try to get a few items done in amongst theirs, but may just have to wait until this evening.

I woke this morning with a new crop of mosquito bites.  We really need to see how they are coming into the house!  I also need to call the city and see if they will do something about the ditches here because they are filled almost entirely with water.  We'd just pour some bleech or chlorine into them except there are crops on the other side of them and we don't want to mess them up.  I sure hope there aren't a bunch of mosquitos at the fireworks stand!

My Yankees are having a dismal season right now and its hard to not feel down.  It seems everyone's jumping on the Yankee-bashing bandwagon, and it would be easier to ignore them if we were doing better.  The Tigers seem to be holding their own quite well and the Rockies have had some impressive games.  I sure do miss being able to go see some games!  We haven't attended any of the local team's games this season.  There are a few of the players still here from last year, but most have either moved to the Rockies or to the Sky Socks (Colorado Springs).

We watched War of the Worlds last night.  I don't know why we have that movie because it drives me up the wall.  First you have Dakota Fanning (great actress) whose character makes me insane.  Sad thing is, there are actually kids who are allowed to be that way!  Then you have Tim Robbins, who if we'd known was in the movie, we never would have purchased it.  He's on our list of actors/actresses who America bash constantly, funny, how again did they get rich?  Tom Cruise is definitely "out there" but he is a good actor and if you can get past the other two mentioned above, you can kinda enjoy the movie.  Now I know Dakota's character is suposed to be that way and all, but I have to wait a few months between watching the video otherwise I'd scream.  I have on CD a recording of Orsen Wells' War of the Worlds, you know, the one from the radio program.  I could listen to it all the time - of course, I don't know where it is because my kids have it somewhere.

Charlie's parents are going to have him come over while I'm gone this weekend and next week so they can make sure he eats.  I'm going to cook a roast today in the crock pot and he can make sandwiches from that to take to work.  Plus I know his Mom will fill him up AND make sure he takes extra for work.  One day I hope to cook as well as she does.  She wants me to teach her how to make oatmeal bread and wheat bread.  For some reason it doesn't turn out right for her.  So when we get back, I'll get together with her and we'll make a bunch of bread.  Bethany loves making bread so we'll probably end up making 6 loaves.  Now if we can just get Charlie's sister to come over and make some too.........

The boys finished their Saxon placement tests and I must admit that I'm not encouraged.  When they were in Saxon, Dallas was doing Algebra 1/2 and Cody was in 76.  Cody tested 54 and Dallas tested 65!  I don't know if they just forgot how to do certain things (some was careless error as well) or if maybe they didn't know if before, or if it has to do with switching to Rod and Staff.  I know both series are good, I just don't know what to do.  Any advice?
