Quiet Life Homestead

Weather, Time Wasters, Reading

So I was bemoning the fact that it was hot yesterday and that the rain was all gone, right?  Last night we had the most wonderful thunderstorms come through!  It was so awesome!!  Larken, of course, was afraid and barked at the really boomie thunders (I know, not real words, just play along).  There were several that made the house vibrate.  I didn't think we had much rain though until I took the boys to the library.  The river is way up again and right by our house is flooded pretty well again.  I'll bet that poor farmer's pretty upset about his corn.  They keep saying that it will be 88 here, but right now its 77.  I'll take the 77 thank you very much!  Bethany said the cutest thing to Charlie last night.  She said, "I just don't get Oklahoma weather.  One day its cold and the next, wham! its hot."  I guess she doesn't remember much about when we lived here before, but isn't that the cutest?!  It really is true that in Oklahoma you can use the heat and air conditioner in the same day - well, if you have A/C.

I think we're going to really try living without the television, the kids don't know it yet so don't tell them.  :)  I told Charlie that we have four episodes of Christy left to watch (which we'll probably do when the boys get home) and then we can pack it all up.  I know we'll be keeping the DVDs and player, don't know yet on the television - we're talking about putting it all in boxes and keeping it that way.  I'm finding that the television is more and more hampering our homeschooling efforts - especially with regards to reading.  I've also got to tame the computer monster.  The kids and I spent all morning taking silly little quizzes for different things - by the way I'm Electra (Superhero), Cyclops (X-men character), can't remember my 1950s name, am a 1950s type girl, and my 80s hearthrob should have been Kirk Cameron.  That thing gets way too adictive, especially when there are four people taking the tests.  I have so much more that I should be doing with that time!

I have finished read Joel Rosenberg's four book series and am almost finished with his Epicenter book.  (I think for our Bible study, we're going to be reading and studying the prophets.)  I haven't decided which book I'm going to be reading next in my personal reading.  What I need to go is go through my books and see what interests me the most and what will benefit me the most.  I normally have more than one book going at once.  I like to take notes while reading anything remotely educational and that doesn't really work very well when reading in bed at night.  I need to scour our bookshelves for a fiction book.  As for non-fiction (homeschool-wise) I'm still working through College Without Compromise.  I also need to get back into reading a few others (homekeeping) Home Comforts, (Cooking/Health) Nourishing Traditions, and I really need to get into shape so I'll probably read something along those lines.  I do have a few different books dealing with losing weight, but most of them are written on the premise that you have money to purchase various specific types of food and also workout equipment.  Here in the real world, we can't always do that.  Does anyone have any books they'd recommend?

Oh, I am so with you on the TV thing! I have really been convicted about it lately. We went several days without it, and the house was cleaner and we had more of a peaceful environment. I think I even got to bed earlier.

There is nothing worth watching (other than good dvd's and perhaps a little Food Network or something) so I don't think we'll be missing anything. (I don't even watch the news.)

I KNOW I need to cut back on the computer, and that will be a tough one for me...
