Friday Evening

A kitchen store at the mall is going out of business, so after getting Charlie's okay, the kids and I loaded up and drove up to the mall to see what they still had.  We purchased over $160 worth of food items for $45.45!  The store was pretty well cleaned out, I think they said their last day will be Sunday.  I don't understand why some companies price their items so high that they end up going out of business!  I guess its the fast profit thing.  Oh well.

I also got back out before dinner to pick up some quilt batting from WalMart.  That was a mistake!  I didn't realize they don't make batting for twin size quilts!  It has been so long since I've purchased batting, that I forgot.  Since we drove all that way, I went ahead and stocked up on some full and queen size batting.  I guess I should have also picked up some crib, but will probably have enough left over from the twin size for that.

Its progressively getting warmer around here.  The weatherman said we may get back to normal temps by the end of next week.  That will mean lows of between 40&50 and highs between 60&70.  Larken's doing really well with the heat, we've been trying to keep the fans going.  Silly dog's wanting to sleep under blankets at night, though!

I went ahead and purchased the Thin Man DVD collection for Charlie.  We looked for it while living in Michigan and couldn't find it anywhere for under $100.  The set I bought today was $50.  It's something we really don't need, but I wanted to do something nice for Charlie.  I also cooked up a bunch of bacon earlier today so we'd have bacon for his sandwiches and also bacon grease to cook fries in.  Dinner was fries, steak, and corn.  I made extra steak and will cut it up to put into a soup tomorrow.  It's hard to think of soup when its so warm, but it will be good anyway.

Lastly, the kids are on an insect collection frenzy!  Today's addition was the following: 3 bumblebees, 3 grasshoppers, 1 spider, & 1 moth.  The boys are afraid of bees and wasps and are paying Bethany to catch them for her.  She got the bees but couldn't get any wasps today.  I've had to make them move their collection supplies and mounting boards to another room as the kitchen didn't look very appetizing.  :)

That's great that you're making quilts!
Good job on the food also. I love a bargain!
Have a great weekend!

a question

I have never used bacon grease to cook fries in. Can you tell me how you do it? I would love to try it. I love it that your kids are collecting bugs. Mine have been collecting worms, my girlie was naming them and carrying them around (until they died from to much lovins).

****What I do is cook some bacon either earlier in the day or just before I want to cook the potatoes. If the bacon grease has cooled, I "scoop" some out with a spatula onto a skillet. If the grease is still warm, I'll just either pour some into the skillet or cook the potatoes in the same pan that I cooked the bacon in. Peel & cut up the potatoes and throw them into the skillet. I cook them on either 4 or 5 (on my stove) with the lid covering it. Sometimes my goal is just to get the fries tender, but Bethy likes "burnt" ones so sometimes I'll let them get more browned. We really like the flavor the bacon grease gives the potatoes. Also, unlike oil, the bacon grease gets all the way cooked into them and doesn't need a whole lot of draining with paper towels (unless you use too much bacon grease). I normally try to just have the bottom of the pan covered with the grease. You may have to experiment to see what works for you. I've been known to add more bacon grease to the fries while they're cooking if they need a bit more.
Hope that helps!
Vicki

****Thank you. It sounds just like I thought, just wanted to make sure.
