Quiet Life Homestead

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I'm sitting here all bundled up in sweats as the temperature dipped down to 40 last night and is just now at 53 outside.  I turned on the heat (I'm a wimp, I know) last night and I'm shivering in 64 degree weather inside.  I freely admit that I'm a wimp.  It's funny, because in Michigan I didn't mind the cold and snow, in fact the kids and I were known for walking the mile to the Meijer's by us in the snow.  I think it's because the weather has been really nice around here for the past week or so.  I read some other blogs today that had great weather followed up by snow.  I think I'll stop whining!

So, yesterday I messed up twice.  First when the boys and I ran errands, I had Dallas put on the one remaining 80s music cd we have (actually its a 2 cd set).  What I need to do is get rid of it and put some more appropriate cds in the car.  Maybe I'll give it to Staci today.  The other thing was I ordered a soda at dinner.  I ordered one at lunch too, but I don't count that as they didn't have anything else and I have to have a drink when I eat.  We hadn't planned on eating out for dinner last night.  The boys and I went to Charlie's store around 4:30, as usual, and I ended up entering tickets until after 7.  By the time we were so tired and the temptation was too strong, so we ate out.  On the drink thing, we had planned before hand that from now on we order tea, water, or lemonade at restaurants (I don't drink lemonade, by the way), well, when we order I asked for a Coke.  Didn't think about it until I saw the looks on the kids' faces.  Then they said it was okay because at my age it will be hard to remember to do it differently.

We have a few hours left to get the place ready for company.  We took a full load to the Goodwill yesterday but still have too much stuff!  On the homeschool front, I picked up the teacher's manual for Bethany's math, one of the teacher's manuals for Cody's (I still need to get him the book and the other manual), and Dallas' book and teacher's manuals.  On Cody, I thought about hand writing down the problems for him on paper, or on the dry erase board for him to copy, but Charlie said that I shouldn't bother with it.  Thing is, I'd like to get back into gear not this week (company) but the week after.  I wonder how long it takes for Rod and Staff to ship something.  According to their catalog they aren't open on Saturday, so I'll have to call and order Cody's stuff on Monday.  After much prayer, we're going to use their math, english, and science (I already have all their science - bought used).  We're continuing to read and study our Bibles together, spelling is Spelling Power, and reading & history (& geography) are in our list books.  I need to get them going in their Plants Grown Up/Contenders for the Faith (boys) & Polished Cornerstones/Keepers at Home/Training Our Daughters to Be Keepers at Home (Bethany).  I may have to schedule things by time until we get into the habit of doing them.  Its basically retraining, mostly of myself.

I'm feeling very rundown and, just tired.  I think it may be from the two sodas and the lack of water.  I just want to crawl back into bed for a few hours, but instead I'm going to get to work and maybe we'll take a nap later this afternoon.  I've noticed the kids are dragging a bit as well.  The past week has been a bit hectic and I can only think of one day we've been here "full time."

I gotta work harder on this keeper AT HOME thing!

Sometimes I have a hard time on the keeper AT HOME thing as well. It really does make a difference in how I feel if I am running around all the time, it wears me out alot faster. I laughed out loud about what your kids said when you ordered a coke! I would also like to cut out soda but I admit, I am addicted. It is so hard. I haven't heard about the book you are reading, "Nourishing Traditions" I think that was the name. Do you like it so far? Can you tell me more about it?

****I've just begun reading Nourishing Traditions, but do see enough potential to recommend it to my mother-in-law. She's wanting also to make healthy changes. The premise of the book is that a lot of what gets put out "there" about healthy eating is skewed by people who don't have our best health in mind. It's pointing out how our ancestors were much healthier and we should go back to their way of raising food and cooking. Right now I can't have farm animals and may not be able to plant much of a garden, I'm still trying to find out, but there are things I can do and choices I can make, that will benefit myself and my family. I recommend this book to you. Maybe you could see if your local library has it. That way you can skim through it and see what you think. I know I'm not doing it true justice on here. I purchased my copy at Barnes & Noble. They say that they try to keep it in stock, but I had to order it and it only took a few days. Let me know what you decide to do. I'll update you on what I find out as well.
By the way, when I first tried to stop drinking Coke, I got all kinds of headaches (because of addiction withdrawal). The next time I switched to caffene free Coke, but it was harder to quit. This time, I went cold turkey again, the headaches were there but I knew they would be and prepared ahead of time for them.

**Thank you. That books sounds very interesting. I will see if I can find it anywhere around here. I will let you know if I do. I have been trying to drink more water lately and realize when I do, I get even thirstier. I think it is my body telling me I am really dehydrated and would I PLEASE drink more water. So, I am trying.

My goodness but you've been busy. I know it's harder to keep things running along when we have to be out several times a week. But then, that's one of the thing about being in a rual area. Just about no matter what you need to do you have to drive a ways to get to it. A few simple errands can morph into an all day event.
