Quiet Life Homestead

Need Advice, PLEASE

Okay, this entry is going to show how awful I am at times at homekeeping.  I have a down comforter that Charlie bought for Christmas two years ago.  Last year when Larken was a puppy she kept going tinkle on it and like a dummy I threw it in the washer.  After the 5th time (I know, you don't have to say it) I noticed the tag said dry clean only.  The comforter smells a little weird and the feathers - well, about 65% of them - have clumped in their little boxes.  Is there anything I can do to revive or at least halfway rescue it?  I put it out on the porch today to try to freshen it up, but that didn't work.  I really need ya'lls wisdom to help me with this one!

I've heard

...where adding a tennis ball to the dryer with a down comforter will help break up the clumps of feathers. I have never tried it myself, but I have heard it from several sources. No advice about the smell, though. Sorry.

I hate Dry clean only stuff.

I think that comforter is history.

You could take all of the feathers out and use them for a new comforter or feather pillows. That is if the feathers don't smell, just the outer fabric.

I know this probably is not the help you are looking for. maa's mom

Mine says the same thing but my front loader and the dryer- about 4 times and it comes out just fine.
But I do have a feather bed, one that you lay on. That one has to go to the laundry mat, cause my washer can't spin it out.
But lots of dryer time and it comes out ok too.
Just try washing it again, then dry it really well. Make sure that all of the pockets aren't wet. Should be fine.

Blessings,
Debi

If it were me.....

I would go hang it out on a clothesline, if you have one (I do not.), let it hang in the sunshine for a good while and take something to "beat" it with to maybe fluff up those feathers again. I would think the sunshine could help with the smell. Perhaps flipping it partway through to make sure the sunshine gets both sides.....?? It can't hurt to try. :o)
But I live where it's cold and snowy and perhaps you do to and this wouldn't be feasible for you right now.
