Saturday on the Farm

The week got off to a good start, when I sold 2 rabbits on Sunday. A male and a female, we only have one male left now, out of the babies. Here's a pic of the parents. It was really odd, the baby girls looked like the mom, and all the baby boys looked like the dad.

It looks like Sugar, the cat, is expecting kittens. We have no idea when. We'll just have to keep an eye on her. We like to make sure the cats have their kittens inside the house so we can handle them. We don't need a bunch of wild kittens running around.

A & Z have been enjoying the warm weather, playing outside a lot. The built themselves a fort of some kind. Including putting up a flag. The chickens seem to be enjoying it, too.

Of, course, I had to take pictures of the flowers. lol There are a lot more open this week. This is the whole "front bulb garden", that's what we call it. Because it's in the front, and it's all bulbs. lol Very original, I know. lol That's a butterfly house hanging on the old satellite post. We have yet to see any butterflies actually living in it. Maybe this year.

We had the first cookout of the year. Hot dogs over the fire. It was so nice to be able to do it again. We usually have a fire every Friday night. It's so relaxing. My kids aren't the only ones who wear snow boots and shorts this time of year. Right?!

After we ate, we went to look at the flowers in the front yard. H got a surprise when she looked down and saw a snake on the rocks about 6 inches in front of her! Much screaming ensued. I might have been doing some of it. Ok, I did....it was me! I was standing right next to H when she started screaming and pointing.

But never fear, our hero came and killed the snake for us. Then held it up for a picture with it. That C took, because H and I left and went in the house!

And today is the First Day of Spring! Yeah...we are so ready for spring here!

There is still time to enter this weeks Giveaway to win a copy of the book Start Here.

There are pictures over on my other blog.

Happy First Day of Spring!

I had planned a little Garden Party for today ... but the weather is not cooperating with me.  I do believe we'll be restricted to indoor activities this first day of spring; but we'll still have a party regardless of the nasty weather!

Here are a few things that I've got on my Possibilities List for this weekend:

Nest making: here and here (such fun, and we have birds galore in the yard)

Wheatgrass planting (not for the Easter bunny, but for some cute little birds and other pretty spring things): here

Pretty butterflies: here

Sowing flower seeds (indoors)

Making seed mats (oh this is a fabulous idea): here

Baking butterfly and flower shaped sugar cookies to decorate with pretty springy sprinkles and such

and drinking Fairytale tea (see here) which is full of beautiful dried flowers

Those are a few things that I'd like to do over the weekend.  What do you have planned to welcome spring?

In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.
~ Mark Twain

I can identify with this quote!

Yesterday was a lovely 70 degrees.

This morning it is cold, windy, rainy ... with a freeze on the way!

Oh the joys of springtime in Texas!

We planted seeds in the garden yesterday.  I'm afraid they will all be washed away or end up as a crazy quilt instead of the neatly designed beds I planted.  Oh well... such is the life of a Texas gardener!

At least I wasn't like the kind gentleman who gave me 2 tomato plants last week ... frantically covering his 140+ tomato plants with pots and grocery bags yesterday, while I planted seeds!  I covered my 2 little plants up as well ... losing 2 gifted plants would be a shame, losing 140+ would be terrible.   I do hope his plants survive, that would be a lot of tomatoes to replace, and a lot of work, too.

Sounds of Spring are here

Today was just so pretty out that I decided that I should sit outside and get some hand work done while soaking up the sunny rays. While sitting there, the birds were just chirping away like crazy, the mason bees were buzzing around my feet, and hubby and I could hear a woodpecker in the background pecking his little heart away. Oh the sounds of Spring, I just love it.

I did get my other mini greenhouse filled today with new garden seeds. I put in bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, carrots, mexican red beans, great white northern beans and greeen onions. Man o man, are those the tiniest seeds I have ever had to handle. It was almost a tweezer time with the onions and peppers. We love chili in our house so I am starting some mexican red beans for the first time along with the white northerns. Come winter time next year, we will be set for chili and bean soup.

Hubby and I did get some black plastic anchored down on the four garden beds today. I am hoping that it helps to heat up the soil plus kill of any weed seeds that may have gotten in there. I plan on keeping it covered for at least a couple of weeks so it does really good. That's the nice thing about raised beds, you can do it fairly easy. I am hoping by then to add my fertalizer and get planting the rest of the way. They say for our area to start putting things in the ground four weeks before the last frost and that should be about right. My fingers are itching to get dirty!

I guess I should go and see about some supper. Hubby and I watched a movie earlier and ate a bowl of popcorn, so now dinner is gonna be a tad bit late. Oh well.

Oh, and the good news, daughter called me from the grange to let me know that the chicks will be arriving on the 30th of this month. They will have all kinds to choose from. Hubby and I plan to get two of each, maybe three. At $2.33 each, I think that will work out great. Doing the happy dance here.
